Hailee Steinfeld Keeps Marvel Fans Guessing About Kate Bishop’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Future

Kate Bishop fans have been waiting a long time for their favorite archer to pick up her bow again. Hailee Steinfeld made her MCU debut in the Disney+ series ‘Hawkeye’, then popped up briefly in the post-credits scene of ‘The Marvels’ alongside Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan. Since then, the question of whether Hailee Steinfeld will return as Kate Bishop in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has become one of the franchise’s most persistent talking points.

That stinger set the stage for a Young Avengers project, now thought to be a Champions series, and rumors suggest some of those heroes could turn up in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ or ‘Avengers: Secret Wars‘.

Fans got even more excited when a fan asked Steinfeld about returning while she signed autographs at the Mexican premiere of ‘Sinners’, and she appeared to answer with a single nod. By spring, reports were circulating that she would indeed be back as Kate Bishop.

The latest chapter unfolded on September 29, when Steinfeld sat down with Jimmy Fallon on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’. The episode also featured Daniel Kaluuya, baseball star Justin Verlander, and musical guest Magnus Ferrell.

She was there to promote her new movie ‘Hexed’, and the conversation covered her marriage to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, working with Ryan Coogler on ‘Sinners’, and becoming a mom while voicing her role in the animated Disney film.

Naturally, the Marvel rumors came up too. “I don’t know. Time will tell,” Steinfeld said on ‘The Tonight Show. It’s not a denial, but it’s certainly not a confirmation either. Nerdspin pointed out that this kind of noncommittal reply is standard Marvel practice, and fans have learned to read between the lines of every word.

Steinfeld’s careful answer arrives just as a new clue has fans convinced she’s already part of the film. A ScreenX version of the latest ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ trailer widens the picture to 270 degrees by revealing more of the scene on either side. That extra space shows that a moment between Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man and Kathryn Newton’s Cassie Lang seems to take place inside Kate Bishop’s apartment.

Steinfeld herself doesn’t appear in the shot, but the set alone has been enough to fuel speculation. Marvel Studios hasn’t confirmed anything about the ScreenX detail and has kept most cast news under wraps ahead of the film’s December release. The Russo brothers have also made it clear that the roster isn’t complete, with plenty of secret characters still to be revealed.

If Kate does show up, it could mark the beginning of the Young Avengers finally assembling. Ruaridh Mollica is set to play an older Tommy Maximoff in ‘VisionQuest’, while ‘The Marvels’ opened the door for Vellani’s Ms. Marvel to join Steinfeld and Newton. A return could also reunite Kate with Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, a fitting follow-up to their tense ‘Hawkeye’ scenes.

Even without Marvel, Steinfeld’s plate is full. She and Allen welcomed a baby girl, and ‘Sinners’ took home 4 Oscars. The Tonight Show itself teased that since her last visit, she had gotten married, had a baby, and starred in one of the world’s biggest movies.

She’s also reprising Gwen Stacy for the upcoming ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’, and Deadline reported that she’s set to star with Miles Teller in Paramount’s Olympics film ‘Winter Games’. With that kind of schedule, it’s no surprise she’s keeping her Marvel cards close to her chest.

For now, Steinfeld’s answer leaves the door wide open, and the ScreenX footage has only made fans more certain that Kate Bishop’s story isn’t finished yet. Whether Marvel confirms it before release or saves it as a surprise, the anticipation around her return is only growing.
