The penultimate installment of ‘Last Seen’ answers the question left hanging by the shootout, confirming that Bill died and that everyone got away, which leaves Ian hurting and enraged with few leads. The six episode Apple TV thriller is adapted by Kris Mrksa from Ryan David Jahn’s novel The Dispatcher, and follows police dispatcher Ian Ridley, played by Patrick Brammall, whose young daughter Maggie disappeared 11 years ago. The episode is titled “The Prophet.” It arrives on Wednesday, September 30, with the finale scheduled for October 7.

The ‘Last Seen’ Recap Turns Back to Henry and Jenna’s Past

The story opens 15 years earlier, with Donald, played by Daniel Henshall, driving to his father’s religious compound with his girlfriend Jenna as he tries to quit drinking. Jenna and Donald were together first, and when Donald is caught trying to steal money and forced to leave, Jenna decides to stay.

She grows in faith and grows closer to Henry, and the two eventually marry. After Jenna inherits a farm, they leave to start a life of their own, and their daughter Sarah is born. A tragic accident later kills the child, leaving Jenna broken and Henry searching for answers.

It is then that Henry spots Maggie, who had accompanied Ian to work, and takes her home to Jenna as a replacement for the daughter buried in the woods. One recap points out that the episode never shows the swap between the two girls itself.

Mrksa told TV Insider that he always saw Ian and Henry as quite similar, describing them as “unwavering, driven men.” He added that the flashbacks show Henry as a bereft father and Ian at a time when he took his happy family life for granted.

Why Sarah Returns to the Car and Stays With Henry

In the present, Jenna is bleeding from her gunshot wound. When Henry leaves to find supplies, she urges Sarah to run and tells her she no longer belongs with them. Reluctantly, Sarah leaves.

When Henry returns he is distraught to find her gone, but Sarah could not leave the only mother she knows, so she comes back to the car. For better or worse, she is sticking with Henry and Jenna for now. TV Insider notes that the episode is the one in which Sarah, also known as Maggie, is given a choice.

Before the episode aired, Brammall told TechRadar that by the end of the series “the agency is taken away from them both and given to Sarah.” He said the ending is not the sort you would usually get in a crime drama.

Cowell made a similar point to Spectrum News, saying the girl at the center of the story is the one who gets to make the decision, something he does not think the genre has offered before. Her decision to return gives the ending its weight, since it comes from Sarah herself and not from either father.

The Ending Explained and Where Ian Goes Next

Ian is recovering in the hospital, wounded but alive, which is more than can be said for Bill. Inspector Isabel is beside him when he wakes. Ian then realizes Donald is the only person who can say where Henry has taken Sarah.

Things worsen when Debbie, played by Jessica Wren, arrives filled with grief and rage. Her first child is missing and the father of her nearly born child is dead, and she blames Ian for breaking her life before telling him she is done.

With no options left, Ian checks himself out of the hospital, goes to the house, grabs a gun and ammunition, and says goodbye to his son. He then finds Donald and demands at gunpoint to know where Henry is going. The closing image turns a rescue attempt into something far more dangerous.

What the Finale Must Resolve for Ian and Maggie

One recap argues that viewers now know the truth about Sarah, Maggie, and what happened more than a decade earlier, and asks whether Ian can finally be reunited with the daughter he lost. Another wonders whether Henry ever explained the switch to Jenna or let her believe in her grief that Sarah had somehow been revived.

A critical review from Flicks says the series carries an undeniable momentum thanks to Brammall and his co-stars, and frames the story as two sets of parents each claiming ownership over a child. The same review is less convinced by a flashback episode, arguing that it teaches nothing the characters do not plainly state an hour later.

One outlet expects Donald to take Ian to his father’s commune in the finale, and predicts the closing chapter could turn bloody. Viewers who watched Sarah climb back into that car may want to share whether they read it as loyalty to the only mother she has known or the first sign that she is starting to doubt Henry’s version of her life.
