‘Game of Thrones’ Finally Gets a Big Screen Date, and the Wait for ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ Just Got Real
Westeros has conquered television more than once, but the big screen has stayed stubbornly out of reach. For years, the idea of a feature-length ‘Game of Thrones‘ story has floated around as a maybe, a rumor, or a wish. That uncertainty is finally starting to lift.
Author George R.R. Martin had good reasons for resisting the idea. Back in 2015, he explained that he had turned down film opportunities because he didn’t want to cut significant portions of his books, and he worried a movie would center on a character like Jon Snow or Daenerys Targaryen. A prequel story from further back in the timeline offers a cleaner path.
On September 29, Entertainment Weekly announced on X that ‘Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest’, the first movie spinoff, has an official release date. Warner Bros. confirmed that the film will hit theaters on June 1, 2029.
The news was shared as part of a wider slate update. According to TV Insider, Discovery revealed the date in a letter that also mentioned the next ‘Matrix’, the next ‘Batman’ film, and a live-action ‘Jetsons’ movie starring Jim Carrey. The studio had already confirmed the title at CinemaCon earlier this year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
‘Aegon’s Conquest’ follows Aegon I Targaryen, also known as Aegon the Conqueror, as he sets out to unite Westeros. The story takes place roughly 300 years before the events of the original series and ends with him becoming the first Targaryen king to rule from the Iron Throne. It will mark the first time the character has been portrayed on screen.
The source material is Martin’s ‘Fire & Blood’, the same book behind ‘House of the Dragon’. That series is set nearly 200 years before ‘Game of Thrones’, beginning about 100 years after the Targaryen conquest. The film will therefore go even further back to show how the dynasty began.
Owen Harris is set to direct. He previously helmed 3 episodes of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’, including the action-heavy ‘Seven’ episode featuring the Trial of Seven. TheWrap noted that the series earned an Outstanding Drama Series nomination at the Emmys.

Beau Willimon wrote the screenplay. He is the creator of ‘House of Cards’ and also wrote the films ‘The Ides of March’ and ‘Mary Queen of Scots’, along with several episodes of ‘Andor’. That mix of political drama and large-scale storytelling suits a tale about conquest and power.
No cast has been announced, and there is no word yet on when production will begin. Those details will likely become the next major talking points for fans hoping to learn who will play the first Targaryen king. For now, the director and writer are the strongest indicators of tone.
The film is the latest expansion of Warner Bros.’ franchise, which has added 2 shows since the flagship series ended in 2019. A theatrical release marks a new chapter for a property that has always been defined by television. It also signals confidence that audiences will pay to see Westeros on a bigger canvas.
The date is still a few years away, which gives the studio time to build anticipation. It also gives fans plenty of time to speculate about casting, dragons, and how much of the conquest will fit into a single movie.
If the film delivers on the scale of the source material, it could reshape how the franchise is remembered. With a release date locked in and a creative team attached, the wait for ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ finally feels real rather than hypothetical.
