Florence Pugh Thanks Tom Holland for Getting Yelena Into ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

Marvel cameos are supposed to feel like surprises, but the story behind them is often the most interesting part. Behind every fan-favorite appearance is usually a chain of conversations, rumors, and lucky moments. This time, one actor says the credit belongs to a co-star’s offhand answer on a red carpet.

Florence Pugh has been a Marvel fixture since she first played Yelena Belova in ‘Black Widow’, and her character has only grown more popular since. That popularity made her appearance in the biggest movie of the year feel both surprising and inevitable.

Speaking on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ on Monday night, Pugh revealed that Tom Holland is the reason she ended up in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. Variety shared her comments on X on September 30, and the story quickly spread. She said the whole thing happened because of Holland, who used a red-carpet interview to publicly name her when asked who he wanted to work with next.

Pugh explained that back then, her version of Yelena wasn’t yet as obviously huge as the franchise’s biggest superheroes. Holland could have named any of them, but he picked her character instead. That choice got fans excited about the idea of the two teaming up, which she said started the ball rolling.

According to Dork, Holland made the comment at the premiere of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ in 2021, telling Entertainment Tonight that a Spider-Man and Black Widow movie would be a fun little twist. Inkl added that Pugh later admitted in 2023 that she wanted Yelena to appear opposite Holland’s Spider-Man. The pieces had been in place for years.

In the film, Pugh’s Yelena appears briefly in a comedic scene. Independent reported that she gives Peter Parker advice and information from an unusual office in a Russian bathhouse in New York. The scene marked a direct exchange between the 2 characters, something fans had wanted to see for a long time.

Pugh also told Fallon that she did a fair bit of riffing on the day of filming. She revealed that her favorite line from the movie is her back-and-forth with Peter about big potatoes stuff, according to Yahoo. Keeping the cameo secret was another challenge, since she joked that nobody would believe she spent the day in a bath with Holland.

The secrecy paid off. Dork noted that Pugh’s role had been kept under wraps before the film’s release, making her appearance a genuine surprise for audiences. It also gave the movie one more crowd-pleasing moment in an already packed release.

The film itself has been a monumental success. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ premiered on July 31 and has earned $2.49 billion at the box office, according to Variety, making it one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. Being part of a release of that scale is a major milestone for any cast member, even in a brief role.

Pugh first played Yelena in ‘Black Widow’ in 2021, returned in ‘Hawkeye’, and reprised the role in ‘Thunderbolts*’ in 2025. Her arc has become one of the MCU’s most consistent success stories. Each appearance has built on the last, and the Spider-Man team-up adds another chapter.

Fans won’t have to wait long to see her again. Dork reports that her next confirmed Marvel appearance is in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, due on December 18. After a scene-stealing cameo alongside Holland, expectations for her role in that ensemble are already high.

The story also shows how much fan enthusiasm can shape the MCU. A single answer in a crowded interview turned into a real cameo years later. It’s a reminder that in Hollywood, a little public support can go a long way.
