New ‘VisionQuest’ Trailer Pulls Vision Deeper Into His Strangest Identity Crisis Yet

Few Marvel characters have had a stranger journey than Vision. Paul Bettany first joined the MCU by voicing Tony Stark’s AI assistant J.A.R.V.I.S. in 2008’s ‘Iron Man’, before playing Vision in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ and later voicing him in the animated ‘What If…?’. Now, ‘VisionQuest’ is set to give the synthezoid his most personal story yet.

The series closes out a trilogy that began with 2021’s ‘WandaVision’ and continued with 2024’s ‘Agatha All Along’. It has been a long road to get here, as development on a Vision series began by October 2022 with ‘WandaVision’ head writer Jac Schaeffer, before ‘Star Trek: Picard’ showrunner Terry Matalas took over and redeveloped the project.

On October 1, Marvel Studios released a new trailer for ‘VisionQuest’. Running roughly 2 and a half minutes, it arrives just under 2 weeks before the series premieres on Disney+ on October 14. One still from the footage shows Bettany’s Vision walking through an overcast English town, looking anything but heroic.

The new footage builds on the first official trailer, which Marvel unveiled at D23 in August. That earlier look revealed Vision living as a humble guy working in a British pub, where he had carved a “W+V” heart into the bar. A first look at the series had also debuted during Disney’s Upfront presentation in May.

The story centers on a rebooted Vision who has escaped those trying to weaponize him and gone into hiding. Searching for new meaning, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and Ultron.

That last name is the big draw. James Spader returns as Ultron for the first time since 2015’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, this time even appearing in human form inside Vision’s mind. Matalas has called the relationship between Vision and Ultron a central dynamic of the series.

Fans have already zeroed in on Spader’s performance in the new footage. One viewer under the trailer post called it excellent but joked about Ultron’s unexpected “Mazel Tov” line, a reminder that the villain’s dry wit is very much intact.

Vision won’t be on this journey alone. A bounty puts him on the run alongside Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be his reincarnated son. In the D23 trailer, Ultron even urged Vision to free them all and save his son, setting up the emotional stakes.

The supporting cast is stacked. Joining Bettany and Spader are Ruaridh Mollica, Todd Stashwick, T’Nia Miller, Lauren Morais, Orla Brady, Diane Morgan, Polly Frame, Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, Emily Hampshire, and James D’Arcy, who reprises his role as the human Jarvis.

Vision famously died in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and wasn’t among those revived in ‘Avengers: Endgame’. He also didn’t return in ‘Agatha All Along’, leaving fans waiting for answers ever since the ‘WandaVision’ finale in 2021.

Bettany has been playful about his character’s habit of coming back. During the D23 presentation, he joked about Vision dying several times and teased that in the Marvel universe, no one is truly gone unless Kevin Feige says so.

With 8 episodes on the way and a cast mixing familiar faces with new ones, ‘VisionQuest’ is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s most unusual Disney+ projects yet. The core question- what makes someone human- looks set to drive the whole series.
