Paris Fashion Week rarely goes exactly to plan, but few guests expected the weather to become one of the stories of the season. Stella McCartney’s latest show was held outdoors, and the skies did not cooperate. Jennifer Lopez’s umbrella moment at the event has now become one of the week’s most talked-about front-row incidents.

The show itself was a milestone for the designer. McCartney marked 25 years since her first Paris show with her Spring/Summer 2027 collection, staged on a rain-soaked runway in the British ambassador’s gardens. Fittingly, the open-air presentation carried an “under the sea” theme, which made the downpour feel almost on brand.

The 57-year-old singer and actor attended the show on Wednesday, September 30, taking a front-row seat as heavy rain fell around the guests. She arrived wearing a faux-fur shawl over McCartney’s layered Sable midi dress, finished with a black veil. According to reports, her seat was already wet when she arrived, and her bodyguard held an umbrella over her while she waited for the show to begin.

That’s where things got complicated. As reported by the Daily Mail and picked up by several outlets, staff asked Lopez to lower her umbrella. A woman seated behind her reportedly passed along the request, and Lopez was said to have responded with a surprised “Oh” before initially keeping the umbrella up.

When staff asked again, Lopez reportedly appeared displeased, according to the same coverage. She eventually handed the large umbrella back to staff behind her and watched the remainder of the show without cover.

As the rain continued, her hair and outfit reportedly became wet. Photos from the show captured her seated in the front row in her brown ensemble, looking far from thrilled with the conditions. Still, she stayed through the presentation despite the weather. It’s worth noting that the account of her mood comes from onlookers and photos rather than from Lopez herself. She has not publicly commented on the moment.

On the runway, the collection made its point with a mix of tailoring and sportswear. Drawstrings were threaded through oversized blazers in a nod to rain jackets, while soft peplums rounded at the hip appeared throughout. Airbrushed dolphins leapt across T-shirts, paired with second-skin leggings and boxy technical jackets.

The message was clear. McCartney took aim at the fishing industry, 25 years into a label that has never used leather, fur, or feathers. Karlie Kloss and Miranda Kerr walked the runway in wave-inspired looks, while Juliette Binoche sat near Lopez. At the finale, McCartney appeared in jeans, a white T-shirt, and her signature baggy blazer, offering the crowd a quick thumbs-up and thanks before heading backstage.

The rainy outing was just one stop in a packed schedule for Lopez. She has been a regular presence throughout fashion month, turning up at events in both Milan and Paris. The McCartney appearance stood out because of its mix of high fashion and unpredictable weather.

Umbrella requests at outdoor shows typically aim to keep sightlines clear for photographers and other guests, which can put front-row attendees in an awkward spot when the weather turns. In Lopez’s case, the moment simply played out in front of a lot of cameras.

Should Jennifer Lopez have been allowed to keep her umbrella at the Stella McCartney show?
