‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Filming Slips Again, but Marvel Is Reportedly Holding Firm on Its Release Date

The road to the finale of Marvel’s Multiverse Saga has been anything but smooth. ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ has bounced around the calendar for years, and its production timeline keeps shifting every few weeks. The latest Avengers: Secret Wars filming update suggests the wait to get cameras rolling will stretch into next year.

The release date itself has a long history of changes. The film was pushed from May 1, 2026, to May 7, 2027, and then reported in May 2025 to be moving again to December 17, 2027. Marvel’s own official page still lists that December date, with Joe and Anthony Russo directing.

Now, a fresh report claims Marvel’s biggest upcoming film won’t start shooting until 2027. According to insiders ApocHorseman and Daniel Richtman, as shared by Cosmic Marvel on X, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ will reportedly film from January through late April or May. Despite the delays, Marvel is said to be insisting on keeping the December 17, 2027, release date.

That would mark yet another shift in a fast-moving story. Just last week, Richtman claimed filming would begin in early October 2026, before a later update pushed the start to November.

The January window represents a further delay of roughly 2 months. Marvel Studios has not officially announced a filming start date. The studio also hasn’t announced any revised production schedule or change to the release date.

If the new timeline holds, the math gets tricky. With filming wrapping in late April or early May, post-production would have to be completed in roughly 7 to 8 months to make the December 2027 target.

That’s a big ask for a film of this scale. Some industry watchers believe the schedule and launch date will eventually move, especially with reshoots on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ being prioritized ahead of its December 18, 2026, release. One TechRadar writer argued that pushing the film out of 2027 would be a huge blow for Marvel, since it is the studio’s only movie scheduled that year.

The production schedule has been sliding all year. Secret Wars was originally expected to begin filming in mid-2026, then August, then later in the year. Back in May, ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ star Ebon Moss-Bachrach was asked about juggling a Broadway run ending in mid-July with Secret Wars filming beginning in August.

For comparison, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ filmed from April to September 2025 at Pinewood Studios in England. Both Avengers films are being produced at Pinewood, and Secret Wars will follow Doomsday by almost exactly a year.

Earlier rumors had even suggested Marvel shot some ‘Secret Wars’ scenes during ‘Doomsday’ reshoots. More recent reports have pushed back on the idea that the movie is already in production.

Unsurprisingly, the reaction online has been skeptical. Under Cosmic Marvel’s post, one fan shared a meme poking fun at what the film’s visual effects might look like on such a compressed schedule. Earlier in the year, some fans had already speculated the film could slip to 2028 because of its late start and massive ensemble cast.

The creative team remains impressive regardless. The screenplay comes from Stephen McFeely, Michael Waldron, Chris McKenna, and Erik Sommers, with Alan Silvestri composing the score.

Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Letitia Wright are among those who have confirmed their involvement. For now, December 17, 2027, remains the official date. Whether it survives a January start is the question hanging over Marvel’s biggest finale.
