Florence Pugh Goes Full Black-And-White Drama for Her ‘East of Eden’ Tudum Cover
Florence Pugh’s ‘East of Eden’ rollout has delivered no shortage of striking images, from glamorous premiere gowns to buzzy magazine covers. She recently fronted Vanity Fair’s October issue, photographed by Nadine Ijewere in a metallic headpiece, as the magazine celebrated her as a Renaissance Woman. Now, Netflix’s own publication has given Florence Pugh a cover moment of its own.
The timing couldn’t be better. Zoe Kazan’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel has just landed on Netflix, with Pugh starring as Cathy Ames opposite Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, Tracy Letts, Ciarán Hinds, Martha Plimpton, and Hoon Lee. She also serves as a producer on the 7-episode limited series.
On October 1, Tudum Magazine shared images of Pugh photographed by Daniel Jackson for its new cover story. The shoot leans heavily into black-and-white theatrics, starting with a delicate profile portrait of Pugh with her hair swept into a loose, tousled updo.
Another standout frame shows her in a dark strapless gown with a dramatic structured headpiece, one leg propped on a wooden stool as the skirt spills across the floor. Additional images capture her lounging across a vintage chair in light sleepwear, adding a softer, more intimate contrast to the sculptural portraits.

The photographer is a familiar collaborator. Jackson’s background in sculpture helps explain the architectural feel of the images, and he previously shot Pugh for her US Vogue cover story in February 2020.
The accompanying feature, written by Krista Smith, digs into how Pugh approached one of literature’s most complicated women. In the Tudum cover story, Pugh explained that she has made a habit of playing female characters who were previously unliked, and takes pride in finding ways to make them human.

She also revealed that the project began with an invitation from Kazan back in 2020, asking her not only to act in the series but to join the creative journey behind it. Pugh described that kind of trust as a huge confidence boost, saying it allowed her to be part of conversations she had never been included in before.
The intense production schedule pushed her as a performer, too. With 7 episodes shot in a short period and dialogue rooted in a different era, she told the outlet, “I had to approach this role in a way that I’d never done before.”

One of the most striking parts of the interview is how personal the role became over time. Pugh reflected that 6 years have passed since her first phone call with Kazan, and that she has grown enormously during that period, much like Cathy herself. She said aging alongside the character brought depth and humility to the performance.

She also spoke about defending Cathy, explaining that the character’s choices stem from something that happened to her very young. For Pugh, showing that ripple effect across decades was the key to making audiences feel for her.

The reaction online has been enthusiastic. Fans flooded the replies to the outlet’s post with praise, with one simply declaring that Pugh had absolutely nailed the shoot. The images quickly racked up thousands of likes.
With ‘East of Eden’ now streaming and Pugh set to return as Yelena Belova in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on December 18, the cover lands at one of the biggest moments of her career so far.
