Sad News for ‘Transformers’ and ‘G.I. Joe’ Fans as Crossover Movie Is Officially Dead

For more than a decade, fans have dreamed of seeing Optimus Prime and the G.I. Joe team share the big screen. Both franchises are owned by Hasbro and have long been tied together in the minds of fans, which made a team-up feel almost inevitable. Now, Paramount’s Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover has officially been scrapped before it ever got off the ground.

The idea has been around for a long time. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura said back in 2013 that Paramount was planning a crossover, but the project was sidelined for years before the studio began actively developing it again in 2021.

The strongest hint arrived with 2023’s ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’. In the film’s post-credits scene, Noah Diaz was approached by a G.I. Joe recruiter, seemingly laying the groundwork for a shared universe.

Paramount then hired Derek Connolly to write the crossover in 2024. Chris Hemsworth was reportedly circling the lead human role as Duke, having already connected with the franchise by voicing Orion Pax, who becomes Optimus Prime, in 2024’s animated ‘Transformers One’.

On October 1, Deadline reported that Bradley Cooper has been cast as Duke in Danny McBride’s new ‘G.I. Joe’ film. At the very bottom of the story came the bombshell: the reboot will be uncoupled from the previous crossover with ‘Transformers’, which is no longer in development.

DiscussingFilm’s post about the news exploded online, pulling in roughly 1.8 million views. Plot details for McBride’s film remain under wraps, though it has been described as a reimagining of the ‘G.I. Joe’ franchise and was expected to begin filming next year.

The project lost momentum amid a string of setbacks for Paramount’s Hasbro films. The big-screen ‘Transformers’ franchise has struggled since ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ underperformed, and the pivot to animation with ‘Transformers One’ didn’t provide the boost the studio hoped for. Its director later said Paramount Animation had no interest in a sequel.

The timing also points to bigger changes at the studio. The decision comes possibly days away from Paramount’s merger with Warner Bros., and Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison has made it clear that getting the ‘Transformers’ movies back on track is a top priority.

Despite the cancellation, the robots in disguise aren’t disappearing. The ‘Transformers’ series has earned $5.2 billion to date, making it far too valuable for Paramount to abandon.

Several ideas have been floated over time, including a direct sequel to ‘Rise of the Beasts’ and even a return for Michael Bay, though none has gained much momentum. For now, the studio seems focused on rebooting each franchise on its own terms rather than forcing them together.

The response online has been mixed. Some fans admitted they weren’t surprised given the lack of updates over the years, while others immediately started pitching new team-ups, with one suggesting a ‘Transformers’ and ‘Fast & Furious’ crossover instead. For now, the dream of seeing Autobots fighting alongside Duke and the Joes is on hold. Whether Paramount revisits the idea once both franchises are rebuilt remains to be seen.

What do you think about the Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover being scrapped?
