Few hosts get to ring in their birthday in Studio 8H, but Dakota Johnson did exactly that this weekend. The ‘Verity’ star hosted ‘Saturday Night Live’ on October 3, just hours before turning a year older on October 4, with Turnstile serving as the episode’s musical guest.

It was a homecoming of sorts for the actress. Johnson previously hosted during season 40 in 2015 and season 49 in 2024, and she even popped up in season 51 as “Madeline” during Lily Allen’s musical performance; she spent part of her press week telling Seth Meyers all about hosting on her birthday.

Now fans have a behind-the-scenes look at how the night began. A backstage photo shared online on October 4 shows Johnson getting ready in her dressing room in her fitted red monologue dress, standing at a vanity mirror decorated with a handmade “Happy Birthday Dakota!!!” sign.

The snapshot captures a cozy pre-show scene. Johnson stands at a classic bulb-lined mirror cluttered with makeup and flowers, her long dark hair falling down her back as she checks her reflection.

The birthday sign taped to the mirror is a sweet touch, clearly marked for October 3 to celebrate the occasion a little early. The image was also tagged to Johnson with a birthday message and a row of red hearts.

It’s a far cry from the polished glamour of the stage, offering a rare and relaxed glimpse at the moments before a live broadcast. Fans quickly shared the photo, which picked up thousands of views within hours.

That red latex dress didn’t just look striking; it became part of the comedy. Johnson joked that she would be celebrating her birthday at midnight the way she always does, by standing in the middle of Midtown in a latex dress looking for attention, as she said in her monologue.

She also poked fun at ‘Madame Web’, which she had been promoting the last time she hosted. Johnson quipped that she was still promoting it because the movie hadn’t made any money yet. The rest of the monologue centered on her dating life with musicians. She joked that whenever she goes to a concert, she seems to leave with a 2-year relationship.

The biggest surprise came when Johnson introduced her “literal therapist,” cueing Taylor Swift to join her onstage. Swift playfully explained that Johnson shows up at her house once a week with an empty bottle of wine, overshares on her couch, and eventually gets sent home with a Pedialyte and a ride from Swift’s security.

The pair recently worked together on Swift’s “Patient Zero” music video. Swift also slipped in a nod to Travis Kelce when Johnson listed Cleveland among the places tied to her romantic misadventures.

Swift then excitedly announced it was Johnson’s birthday, just a little early since the big day didn’t arrive until midnight. She returned during the goodnights at the end of the show, carrying out a birthday cake for the host.

For Johnson, born in Austin on October 4, 1989, to actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, the night carried a bit of history too. When she first hosted in 2015, she became the second daughter of a former ‘SNL’ host to take on the job herself.

Between the dressing room sign, the cake, and a surprise from one of her closest friends, Johnson’s third hosting gig turned into a full-blown birthday party. Judging by the backstage photo, the celebration started well before the cameras rolled.
