‘Tracker’ returns to CBS this Sunday for its fourth season, airing on CBS and streaming on Paramount+. The premiere follows a finale that left Colter Shaw’s family history more tangled than it was before. This ‘Tracker’ recap covers the storylines that matter most going into the new episodes.

The Justin Hartley drama follows a rewardist who travels the country finding missing people and collecting the rewards, while he deals with a personal mystery involving his father’s death and his family’s past. The last finale aired in late May and ended on a cliffhanger that threatens to reveal a big secret about its central character.

The Chrono Stasis Project Behind the Tracker Recap

The penultimate episode brought Jensen Ackles back as Russell, who had learned that Dr. Serena Jukic worked with their father on the chrono stasis project in Alaska. Jukic told the brothers that the research had been weaponized. She also said their father became disillusioned when children were brought in to be tested.

Before meeting her, Colter had a difficult conversation with his mother, who admitted she had lied to protect her family. She said that Ashton came home from Alaska angry, broken and paranoid about the government, and that she called Otto, who killed Colter’s father on his own. She had also let Colter believe that Russell was responsible.

Jukic’s story led to Danny Kellerman, a test subject she had grown attached to. Randy discovered that the surveillance on her was paid for by a shell company owned by DORIX Logistics, a private military contractor indirectly connected to the DoD. The episode closed with Colter finding Danny, who pushed a button that summoned armed guards instead of leaving with him.

Russell Shaw and the File Colter Has Not Seen

In the finale, Danny explained that he refused to leave because he needed to help his friend Lola. Russell then joined Colter in shooting their way out, and Jukic helped Danny through a remote viewing session to narrow down where Lola was being held.

The danger escalated quickly. Russell’s agency source warned that DORIX was hunting both brothers and that a man named Damian Vickers had been commissioned to kill them. The source was killed soon after, and Russell was shot in the shoulder. Colter eventually left Vickers alive long enough to ask who put out the contract, and killed him only when he reached for his weapon.

The most consequential scene belonged to Russell. He found DORIX’s head, McIntyre, who handed over Ashton’s file and insisted that what their father did to Colter was true. McIntyre offered to let Russell burn it in exchange for a favor, and Russell agreed without knowing what the job was. He then told Reenie that he needed to leave for a while and that Colter could not know why.

Colter, meanwhile, was fixing up his father’s old truck with Keaton and saying that Ashton was a good man at the end. He had no idea what Russell was holding. That gap in knowledge is the emotional engine the new season can build on.

What to Expect From the Season Four Premiere

The premiere airs Sunday on CBS and begins at half past nine Eastern, immediately after ‘Marshals’. The episode is titled “Safe Harbor,” and CBS describes a story where Colter’s search for a teenage boy’s missing father leads him to a dangerous criminal operation at the Port of Los Angeles. Joel Novoa directed it.

Hartley leads the cast, with Chris Lee returning as Randy and Fiona Rene back as Reenie. The ensemble has changed since last year, because Abby McEnany and Eric Graise left between seasons, leaving Hartley and Rene as the only series regulars. Ackles is not part of that core group, but his return for the new season has been confirmed.

The biggest production change is geographic. Filming has moved from Vancouver to Los Angeles, helped by a significant tax credit from the California Film Commission. Showrunner Elwood Reid told Deadline that “Location is a huge part of the storytelling” on the series, and Hartley said he was excited to bring the show to L.A.

Why Colter Shaw’s Return Matters to CBS

The network committed to this story early. CBS renewed the series for a fourth season in January, alongside a slate of returning shows. That decision looked safe given the numbers.

CBS held four of the five top series last broadcast season, with ‘Marshals’ in first place and ‘Tracker’ in second. One outlet noted that the pairing of the two shows is one of the most lucrative lineups any network has. Keeping them back to back on Sunday nights suggests CBS sees no reason to change a formula that is working.

For viewers catching up, the key question is how long Russell can keep Ashton’s file hidden, and what Colter does when he learns his brother made a deal over it. Do you think Russell took McIntyre’s offer to shield Colter from the truth about their father, or to protect himself, and how should Colter react when he finds out?
