‘CIA’ Returns to CBS This Fall With a Longer Season and an Unresolved Cliffhanger
The ‘CIA’ second season premieres on Monday, October 5, at 9 PM ET on CBS. The series was created by Dick Wolf and David Hudgins and is the sixth spinoff of the FBI franchise. For viewers who followed the first run, the return comes with a major question left hanging.
The first season ended on a bombshell cliffhanger that revealed a presumed dead former partner was still alive. That unresolved thread, along with a significantly larger episode order, gives the ‘CIA’ second season more room than the series has had before.
CIA Season 2 Release Date and Where to Watch
New episodes will air weekly on Mondays at 9 PM ET on CBS, with ‘FBI’ leading in at 8 PM and ‘Harlan Coben’s Final Twist’ following at 10 PM. That places the show in the same Monday block it occupied during its debut run.
Episodes will be available to stream the next day on Paramount+. Subscribers to the Paramount+ Premium plan can also stream CBS live, so there is no waiting at all.
The path to this date was not always clear. CBS renewed the show on March 23, just ahead of its fifth episode, and at that point a premiere date had not been announced and a midseason return was still possible. CBS later confirmed the show would return in the fall on Monday nights at 9 PM Eastern. The first season had itself been pushed from a fall launch to midseason.
CIA Season 2 Cast and the Fallout From the Finale
The main cast is returning for the second season. That includes Tom Ellis as CIA case officer Colin Glass, Nick Gehlfuss as FBI special agent Bill Goodman, Natalee Linez as analyst Gina Gosian and Necar Zadegan as Nikki Reynard, Deputy Chief of the CIA’s New York station.
The finale gave each lead a decision to deal with. Glass discovered that his former lover and partner, Antoinette “Toni” Napier, had not died in an explosion in the Philippines a year earlier, as he had believed. Goodman, meanwhile, turned down a promotion to Cleveland.
The central partnership appears to be shifting. The first season closed with the two men settling into a new dynamic in which they had nearly swapped places in terms of calmness. According to TV Insider, the first season was built to bond the pair as friends so they could enter the next chapter on much more equal footing.
The CIA Season 2 Premiere Episode ‘The Deep’
The premiere is titled ‘The Deep,’ written by Mike Weiss and directed by Ken Girotti. It is the first chance to see how the writers handle the fallout from the finale.
The plot begins when a known cartel fixer arrives in New York City, and the team tracks him down and discovers the body of a DEA agent. That setup points toward a case rooted in international crime, the kind of story the series was built to tell.
The episode also welcomes John Boyd back from ‘FBI’ as a guest star. The crossover is a reminder of how closely the show remains tied to its parent series.
CIA Season 2 Episode Count and Early Expectations
The second season is planned for 22 episodes, a significant increase from the 12 episodes of the first season, and will run from fall into spring. A fuller order should allow for more serialized storytelling alongside the weekly cases.
The numbers help explain the confidence from the network. The series premiere drew 8.4 million multiplatform viewers within seven days, and the first three episodes improved the time period viewership by 39% over the previous fall. The show also won its time slot against ‘The Rookie’ on ABC and ‘The Voice’ on NBC.
Some viewers have clear preferences for where the story goes. One outlook from Matt and Jess hopes the writers lean toward international intrigue and geopolitics over standard action-heavy cases while keeping the central partnership front and center. Readers who followed Glass and Goodman through the first season may want to weigh in on whether the return of Toni Napier should reshape their partnership or stay a slow burn in the comments.
