‘Murdoch Mysteries’ Returns for a Milestone Season With a Mediterranean Detour
The new season of ‘Murdoch Mysteries’ begins on Monday, October 5, with the premiere airing on CBC, CBC Gem and Ovation. The milestone season sends Detective William Murdoch well beyond Toronto, with his travels taking him to Malta.
For a series that first aired in Canada in January 2008, a twentieth season is a notable marker. The show is based on Maureen Jennings’ Detective Murdoch books and follows a methodical detective who pioneers forensic techniques in Toronto at the dawn of the twentieth century. The new season runs to 21 episodes.
Murdoch Mysteries Season 20 Release Date and Where to Watch
The season debuts on CBC and the cable channel Ovation on Monday, October 5, 2026. In the United States, Ovation will air the premiere at 8 p.m. ET. As TV Insider exclusively revealed, the U.S. premiere falls on that Monday evening on Ovation TV.
Episodes are expected to air weekly through May 2027, with the usual holiday breaks. Acorn TV will stream the season starting in early 2027, continuing weekly through mid July. Viewers in Canada can also catch the series on CBC Gem.
Production on the season is scheduled between May 19 and December 18, 2026, with locations that include Scarborough, Ontario. That schedule suggests the season will still be filming even as its first episodes reach audiences.
Malta Premiere Episode Sets a Bigger Stage
The premiere finds Murdoch in Malta, where mystery author Nigella Fletcher is awaiting execution for the murder of her husband. Murdoch doubts the seemingly open and shut case and uncovers links to a stolen priceless tapestry and a centuries old treasure map. The trail then sends him in pursuit of both a fugitive and the truth.
The episode is titled ‘The Maltese Falconer’ and carries an October 5, 2026 date. The title alone signals a lighter, more adventurous tone than the show’s typical Toronto murder investigations.
Christina Jennings, Chairman and President of Shaftesbury, said sending Murdoch to Malta allowed the series to move into full adventure territory. She described the result as Murdoch on a much bigger canvas. The comment frames the trip as a deliberate creative swing rather than a one off novelty.
New Season Guest Stars and Returning Cast
Yannick Bisson returns as the title character, joined by Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Inspector Albert Choi, Shanice Banton as Chief Coroner Violet Hart, Daniel Maslany as Detective Watts, Lachlan Murdoch as Constable Henry Higgins, Arwen Humphreys as Margaret Brackenreid and Clare McConnell as Crown Attorney Effie Newsome-Crabtree. Thomas Craig is also listed as Chief Inspector Thomas Brackenreid.
The guest list includes Sally Lindsay, Jason Mewes, Yanic Truesdale, Ennis Esmer, James Chatto, Emma Slater, Kristian Bruun and Hamza Haq. Lindsay plays Nigella Fletcher in the premiere. Slater is a professional dancer from ‘Dancing With the Stars’, Mewes is known for ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’, and Truesdale for ‘Gilmore Girls’.
Earlier in the year, rumors circulated that Hélène Joy might return as Dr. Julia Ogden in a guest or recurring role. The guest lists announced so far do not include her name, so that question remains open.
Where Murdoch Mysteries Stands After Two Decades
The series is described as Canada’s most watched period mystery show and its longest running. It reached a landmark of 300 episodes during its eighteenth season. That kind of longevity is rare for a drama that depends on a fresh case each week.
The series has also gained a simultaneous U.S. premiere on Ovation, a milestone of its own in recent years. The cliffhanger from the end of the previous season was expected to leave American viewers eager for the new run. The new season arrives with that momentum behind it.
With Murdoch chasing a fugitive and a treasure map across Malta, do you think ‘Murdoch Mysteries’ can keep up this kind of globetrotting adventure, or do the streets of Toronto still suit the detective best?
