With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arriving in theaters on December 18, Marvel’s marketing machine is running at full speed. Tickets are already on sale, and new posters, trailers, and promotional images have been surfacing almost daily as the studio builds anticipation for its massive crossover event.

A big part of that campaign has focused on the film’s mutant contingent. The movie brings back X-Men franchise stars including Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and James Marsden, and Marvel even gave the team its own stained-glass logo poster in Japan, displayed at the Grand Cinema Sunshine in Tokyo.

Now the X-Men’s history is shaping the marketing in an even more direct way. A newly shared piece of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ promo art borrows its design straight from the first poster for 2000’s ‘X-Men’, and fans quickly spotted the resemblance.

The original ‘X-Men’ poster featured vertical strips of the mutants’ faces, cropped close around their eyes, with the tagline “Trust a few, fear the rest” running through the middle. It became one of the most recognizable superhero posters of its era.

The ‘Doomsday’ version adapts that format with a bolder, more colorful approach. Instead of moody blue tones, each character sits against a bright background, split into 2 rows with the word “DOOMSDAY” running across the center.

The lineup mixes heroes from across the film’s major factions. Cyclops appears in his red visor at the top left, alongside The Thing and Black Panther, while Beast can be seen in the lower row among other heroes.

The design reflects the scale of the film’s story. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ brings together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and the Wakandans to face Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.

‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn, who are part of the ensemble. Channing Tatum’s Gambit also joins the legacy X-Men, and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ already designated the mutants’ home reality as Earth-10005, which is set to appear in the film.

Marvel has been careful to give each faction equal billing. SuperHeroHype noted that the stained-glass posters showcased the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Wakandans and X-Men on the same level, signaling that the mutants carry real narrative weight.

This homage is just one piece of a growing wave of promotional material. New promo art featuring Sue Storm, Black Panther, Mystique and Yelena Belova surfaced on the same day, alongside other images spotlighting the Fantastic Four, X-Men and Avengers.

Earlier promo art also brought legacy X-Men actors together with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor in a single frame. That image marked the first official promotional appearance for Beast and Nightcrawler outside of leaked footage.

Even the X-Men’s home base is getting a fresh look. A recently surfaced poster revealed a new X-Mansion, a Victorian stone structure that differs from the Casa Loma location used in 2000’s ‘X-Men’.

The poster homage is a clever way to bridge generations of fans. For longtime moviegoers, it’s a reminder of how the original ‘X-Men’ helped kick off the modern superhero era, while newer fans get a vibrant reimagining that fits the MCU’s colorful style.

If early ticket sales and trailer views are any indication, Marvel’s nostalgia-heavy approach is working. With roughly 2 months to go, fans can likely expect even more callbacks before Doctor Doom arrives.

What do you think of the new ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ promo art paying tribute to the classic ‘X-Men’ poster?
