Joe Russo Explains Why Doctor Doom Is a Far More Dangerous Villain Than Thanos
When the Russo brothers last steered the Avengers, they gave Marvel one of its most iconic villains in Josh Brolin’s Thanos. The Mad Titan’s quest across ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ set an enormous bar for whoever came next.
Now Joe and Anthony Russo are back with a new big bad. Their return as directors, along with Robert Downey Jr.’s casting as Doctor Doom and the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ title, was announced in July 2024, and the film’s script comes from Michael Waldron, Stephen McFeely, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.
With the film’s December 18 release approaching, the directors are finally explaining what sets their new villain apart. In a conversation with Fandango, Joe Russo described Doom as a strategist who wins with his mind, contrasting him with the overwhelming might of Thanos.
The comparison came while discussing the ‘Endgame Encore’ scene in which Doom uses Latverian magic to grab Bruce Banner from a secure underground prison. Russo explained that Doom is a genius who studies his foes, understands them, and never acts off the cuff.
The director drew a clear line between the 2 villains. “Thanos was just like a brute force of nature. He would push his way through every problem. Doom is much more Machiavellian and manipulative than Thanos in that regard,” Joe Russo told Fandango’s Big Ticket.
He also noted that Doom only steps onto the battlefield when he has a tactical or power advantage. That meticulous approach, Russo suggested, makes him extremely difficult to beat. Anthony Russo added another layer to the character. He explained that Doom’s worldview carries an underlying validity, making him relatable even when he makes the wrong choices.

Casting Downey also gives the character a unique twist. Joe Russo described it as an interesting exploration of good and evil, with a duality that comes from the same actor playing both Tony Stark and Doom.
The Russos have previously called Doom one of the most complex characters in the comics. They chose Downey because they felt he could capture both the villain’s immense power and his vulnerabilities.
The directors also hinted that ‘Doomsday’ won’t follow the usual Marvel formula. Joe Russo called the film intense and said it’s different from any other movie Marvel has made, adding that what happens in it is very surprising.
Fans already got a taste of the villain’s menace through ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’. In one of its bonus scenes, Doom forges his trademark iron mask to the same metal clanging sounds heard at the end of the original ‘Endgame’.
New promotional material has also highlighted Doom’s power. One recent promo showed him unleashing his abilities in battle with the iconic “Kirby Krackle” effect, a visual style created by Jack Kirby to depict the strongest forces in Marvel comics.

The scale of the threat is enormous. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ brings the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men together amid a collapsing multiverse, with Doom at the center of the crisis. If Thanos tested the heroes’ strength, Doom looks set to test their wits. Judging by the Russos’ comments, beating him will take far more than brute force.
Do you think Doctor Doom could become the MCU’s greatest villain and top Thanos?
