John Cena has been on a global promotional tour for his latest action adventure, and the momentum is building fast. Just days ago, he and his co-stars traveled to Mexico City for a special screening of ‘Matchbox: The Movie’ at Toreo Parque Central on October 1, where Cena posed for selfies with fans in a tan pinstripe suit.

The film marks Mattel’s next big swing after Greta Gerwig’s Oscar-winning ‘Barbie’ in 2023. Directed by Sam Hargrave from a script by David Coggeshall, it turns the classic toy-car brand into a globe-trotting espionage adventure rather than a conventional children’s movie.

On Monday, October 5, the cast brought the excitement home to New York for the film’s world premiere at AMC Lincoln Square, and Cena didn’t walk the red carpet alone. He was joined by his wife, Shay Shariatzadeh, and a short clip shared by Entertainment Tonight showed the couple sharing a sweet moment that quickly caught fans’ attention.

The couple made a striking pair on the carpet. Cena wore a bold green plaid suit with a red pocket square, while Shariatzadeh stunned in a shimmering olive-green sequined gown with a high neckline and cap sleeves. In the 14-second video, the 2 stand close together as photographers and crew bustle around them. The clip racked up tens of thousands of views shortly after it was posted.

It’s not the first time Shariatzadeh has shown up to support her husband. She also joined Cena at the New York premiere of ‘Ricky Stanicky’ in March 2024. Cena was joined at the premiere by co-stars Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris and Arturo Castro. Biel had some star support of her own, as her husband Justin Timberlake came out for the occasion.

The film’s ensemble extends well beyond the lead cast. Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, Danai Gurira and Golshifteh Farahani also appear in the movie. Cena plays Sean, an undercover CIA operative who returns to his small hometown and reconnects with his childhood friends. Their reunion quickly spirals when Sean’s work drags them into a chaotic international chase to save the world.

The trailer shows his friends being pulled out of ordinary life and into his dangerous mission. Apple has kept most of the plot under wraps ahead of release. The film comes from Apple Original Films, Skydance Media and Mattel Films. Producers include David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger for Skydance, along with Robbie Brenner and Ynon Kreiz for Mattel Films, as well as Jules Daly.

‘Matchbox: The Movie’ premieres globally on Apple TV on Friday, October 9. No theatrical release has been announced, so viewers will need an Apple TV subscription to stream it. The film runs 2 hours and 6 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action, and language. With its premiere tour wrapping up in New York, the film is just days away from reaching audiences worldwide.

For Cena, the premiere offered a chance to celebrate the project with his wife by his side. Judging by the reaction online, fans loved seeing the couple’s red carpet moment just as much as the movie’s big-screen spectacle.
