Netflix’s German period drama ‘The Empress’ has spent 2 seasons bringing the turbulent life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria to the screen. Known in German as ‘Die Kaiserin’, the series follows the young royal as she struggles against the rigid rules of the Viennese court.

It became a global hit almost immediately. After premiering on September 29, 2022, the International Emmy-winning first season stayed in Netflix’s global Top 10 for non-English shows for 5 straight weeks and logged more than 150 million hours viewed.

Now the story is coming to an end. Netflix has released the official trailer for the third and final season, confirming that it premieres on Thursday, November 12, with a tagline that captures the arc of the whole series: “Her title made her famous. Her determination makes her unforgettable.”

The trailer opens with the gates of Schönbrunn Palace swinging open one last time. From there, it focuses on Sisi, played by Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu, as she fights for her heart, her health, and her voice inside a court that keeps trying to control her.

One line sums up the season’s central tension. Sisi is warned that the life she dreams of will never come true, setting up a final battle between royal duty and personal desire. Netflix also released first-look images and new key art alongside the trailer.

According to Netflix’s official synopsis, the final 6 episodes put the imperial marriage through its hardest test yet. Franz returns from war as a scarred man, burdened by guilt over the thousands of soldiers lost on the battlefield.

Meanwhile, Elisabeth’s health suffers under the pressure of court life and her husband’s rejection. When Franz turns to an affair, Netflix teases that both their marriage and Elisabeth’s life are at stake.

There is also a major new connection on the way. During her first major journey far from home, Elisabeth meets someone who will change her life and the fate of the Habsburgs. Katharina Eyssen returns as showrunner and shares creative responsibility with executive producer Robert Eyssen, with Elena von Saucken as co-author.

Sommerhaus Serien, led by executive producers Jochen Laube and Fabian Maubach, is producing. Scarlett Lacey returns as executive producer, with Lars Gmehling serving as co-executive producer. Florian Cossen and Julia Langhof directed the season.

Filming took place during the second half of 2025, with locations in Bavaria, the Czech Republic, and Spain. The wait has been long for fans. Netflix renewed the show for a second season in November 2022, and that season premiered in November 2024.

The series was renewed for its third and final season in January 2025, and Netflix confirmed the plan at its What Next? 2026 showcase in Berlin. The news that the story would end after 3 seasons was bittersweet for many viewers.

‘The Empress’ has kept a strong audience throughout its run. It has drawn more than 65 million views since Netflix began publishing data in its What We Watched reports in July 2023. Reactions to the trailer have been emotional, with many viewers saying they expect the final season to break their hearts.

With Elisabeth’s health, marriage, and future all at risk, it seems likely to deliver a dramatic ending. For fans who want to catch up first, there is still time to rewatch the first 2 seasons before the finale arrives in November.
