Every winter, London’s Oxford Street turns into one of the city’s most famous holiday destinations. As one of Europe’s longest and busiest shopping streets, it draws huge crowds once its Christmas lights go up, usually in early November.

The display has often been tied to a cause or partner. In 2024, the street lit up with 300,000 lights as part of a partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, with the switch-on taking place on November 5.

This year, the festive display is heading to the Wizarding World. HBO Max and the New West End Company have announced a ‘Harry Potter’ Christmas takeover of Oxford Street, adding themed light designs to the street’s familiar star-shaped illuminations.

The partnership is timed to the arrival of HBO’s new original ‘Harry Potter’ TV series. The show begins with an 8-episode season adapting ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, and it premieres on Christmas Day.

The classic star lights will stay in place, while specially created illuminated designs will reference the world of ‘Harry Potter’. The partners have also promised a range of ‘Harry Potter’-inspired celebrations and attractions for shoppers, commuters, international visitors and fans throughout the season.

Dee Corsi, CEO of the New West End Company, described the partnership as a historic moment for Oxford Street. She said bringing the world of ‘Harry Potter’ to the street would create an unforgettable Christmas experience and show off the West End at its best.

The lights will debut alongside another major attraction. Harry Potter Shop Oxford Street opens on November 4 and is set to become the UK’s largest official ‘Harry Potter’ flagship store.

The shop is being promoted as a destination for fans of every kind, whether they consider themselves wizards, witches or Muggles. Its opening lines up neatly with the usual timing of the street’s holiday lights.

Fans eager to see the display will need to wait a little longer for full details. The official switch-on date hasn’t been announced, and more information about the Christmas programming is expected in the coming weeks.

The financial terms of the partnership have not been disclosed. Still, the scale of the collaboration makes it one of the West End’s most ambitious holiday promotions in recent years.

The takeover comes during a major change for the street itself. Around half of Oxford Street’s busiest shopping section is set to become fully pedestrianised, with no cars, buses or bikes, starting on October 26.

That timing means the ‘Harry Potter’ lights will arrive just as visitors gain more room to walk the street. For the West End, it’s a chance to show off a newly transformed shopping district during its busiest season.

The announcement has drawn plenty of reaction online. Many fans love the idea of a Christmas film tradition they can walk through, especially with the new series arriving on Christmas Day.

Others are more hesitant. Some joked that Oxford Street is already overwhelming during the holidays, and that adding ‘Harry Potter’ fans to the crowds could make it even busier. Either way, the partnership is likely to make Oxford Street one of London’s biggest holiday attractions this year. For fans waiting for the new series, it offers an early taste of the Wizarding World before the show arrives.
