More than 3 decades after its release, ‘Basic Instinct’ remains one of the most talked-about films of the 1990s. Paul Verhoeven’s 1992 erotic thriller starred Michael Douglas as San Francisco detective Nick Curran and Sharon Stone as Catherine Tramell, the novelist at the center of his murder investigation.

The film made Stone a star and sparked controversy that has followed it ever since. Stone has spoken openly about the movie for years, including in her own memoir, ‘The Beauty of Living Twice’, and in comments about the pay gap between the leads, saying she earned $500,000 to Douglas’ $14 million.

Now Douglas is offering his side of the story. In his new memoir, ‘One Helluva Ride’, the Oscar winner revisits filming one of the film’s intimate scenes with Stone and reveals she asked him to be gentler after his stubble began causing her real discomfort.

According to Douglas, the sequence took 5 days to film, making it especially demanding for both actors. He writes that he and Stone had agreed not to use body doubles. Douglas also stresses that, despite how convincing the finished scene looks, he and Stone were never actually intimate during filming.

Everything audiences saw on screen was a performance carefully staged for the cameras. As shooting continued, an unexpected issue arose. After a couple of takes, Stone asked Douglas to please go easy, because his facial stubble was scratching her skin.

Douglas recalls noticing that her skin had become red and chafed. He writes that he felt horrible about what had happened, describing it as an uncomfortable moment for his co-star.

The anecdote offers a rare look at the physical realities behind a scene that became central to the film’s reputation. It also highlights how much less protection actors had on set at the time.

The memoir includes another surprising revelation tied to the production. Douglas writes that, while the public was focused on rumors about him and Stone, he was actually involved with another actress from the film, Jeanne Tripplehorn.

He suggests that everyone was so busy speculating about him and Stone that they missed what was really happening off-camera. ‘One Helluva Ride’ was released on October 6 through Grand Central Publishing.

The book traces Douglas’ life and career through 12 of his most iconic films, including ‘Basic Instinct’, ‘Fatal Attraction’ and ‘Wall Street’. TheWrap reported that the memoir’s frank content required extensive legal vetting in both the US and England before publication. It also includes 80 never-before-seen photos, many from Douglas’ personal collection.

Stone has long had a complicated relationship with ‘Basic Instinct’. She has claimed she was misled about the film’s infamous leg-crossing interrogation scene, an account Verhoeven has denied.

Even so, she ultimately chose to let the scene remain in the film. In 2022, both stars marked the movie’s 30th anniversary on social media, with Douglas acknowledging the controversy it sparked along the way.

Douglas’ account quickly spread online, with many fans saying it shows how different film sets were in the early 1990s. Others praised him for acknowledging Stone’s discomfort rather than brushing it off.

For a film so often discussed for its provocative moments, the story adds a more human layer. It reminds audiences that even the most famous scenes came with real challenges for the actors involved.
