Will ‘Below’ Return for a Second Season on Netflix

Netflix’s ‘Below’ arrives today with all six episodes available at once, and viewers finishing the run will naturally wonder about a sequel. The series stars Josh Hartnett, Mackenzie Davis and Charlie Heaton, and follows a Newfoundland community terrorized by an unidentified sea creature. The question of a follow up is a fair one, but the answer right now is more cautious than fans may want.

As things stand, ‘Below’ has not been renewed, and it is billed as a limited series with no immediate plans to continue past its opening run. That is the central fact behind any ‘Below’ season 2 discussion, and it shapes how the rest of the conversation should be read.

Is ‘Below’ Renewed for a Second Season Yet

Entertainment outlets tracking the show put the answer plainly as not yet. A German report on the launch reached the same conclusion, noting that a second season has not been announced. No studio statement, creator comment or renewal notice has surfaced in the material available today.

Timing matters too. Even if Netflix does decide to continue the story, an announcement is unlikely to come soon after the premiere. Streaming services typically want to see how viewers respond before committing to anything further, so patience is the realistic posture for now.

Why the Limited Series Label Matters for ‘Below’

The label is not a technicality. Netflix ordered ‘Below’ in February 2025 as a six episode limited series, with Jesse McKeown serving as creator, writer and showrunner. The format was part of the original pitch rather than a later decision.

Netflix has kept that framing consistent. The streamer explicitly lists the production as a limited series, and all six episodes were released together on the first day. That release pattern suggests a self contained story built to be watched in one sitting.

Still, the label does not close the door entirely. Other shows that carried the same description have gone on to return for additional seasons. A strong audience response could change the calculation, though nothing in the current reporting indicates that Netflix has made such a plan.

What Jesse McKeown Has Said About the Story

The creator’s comments point toward a finished narrative. In an interview with TV-EH, McKeown said he always envisioned the project as a limited series with six episodes. That does not rule out more stories, but it does suggest the ending was designed to land on its own.

McKeown has also described the show as more than a monster story. He called it a creature feature that is also about a family and a community under attack. Material built around character and place can sometimes support expansion, but it can just as easily feel complete after one arc.

His background adds some context. McKeown is a Newfoundland native whose earlier credits include ‘The Umbrella Academy’. He told Netflix Tudum that Newfoundland is a rugged, dangerous and isolated place in many ways. That sense of setting runs through the series and is part of what any continuation would need to preserve.

How Josh Hartnett and the Cast Frame the Project

Josh Hartnett has spoken about the show in terms that favor a single, complete story. Speaking with 5NEWS, Hartnett compared limited series to longer movies and described this one as a six hour film. He added that the team treated it that way while making it.

Hartnett also has a stake beyond acting. He serves as an executive producer alongside McKeown and several others. He has said he read the first two scripts in under an hour and had never read anything like them.

The ensemble is already set up around a self contained mystery. Hartnett plays Calvin Penney, Davis plays Fonda Howander and Heaton plays Wade Penney. Netflix is also still searching for its next major mystery thriller after the end of ‘Stranger Things’, according to a German outlet, which gives the platform a reason to watch how ‘Below’ performs.

For now, the honest read is that ‘Below’ stands as a finished six episode story with no renewal in place and no public sign that one is coming. If the ending leaves you wanting to return to that Newfoundland harbor, does the mystery of the creature feel resolved enough to stand alone, or do you think Calvin Penney’s story deserves another season?
