Zendaya’s Windswept Desert Photo Takes ‘Dune’ Fans Back to Arrakis
Few modern franchises have captured the imagination quite like Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’ saga. Adapted from Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, the films transformed real-world deserts into the harsh planet Arrakis, giving the story a tactile, lived-in feel that fans continue to celebrate.
At the center of the sequel was Zendaya’s Chani, a Fremen warrior and partner to Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides. After a smaller supporting role in the first film, her character became a co-protagonist in ‘Dune: Part Two’, with Chalamet telling Variety at the time that she would bring even more of what she had offered the first time around.
Now a striking image has fans reminiscing all over again. Film account cinesthetic shared a windswept photo described as showing Zendaya on the set of ‘Dune: Part Two’. In the photo, Zendaya stands against a sweeping backdrop of sand dunes beneath a bright blue sky.

Her curly hair blows dramatically in the wind as she tilts her face toward the sun. She wears a simple beige knit cardigan that blends naturally with the golden landscape. The candid shot captures a calm, unguarded moment far removed from Chani’s intense on-screen battles.
For fans, the image is a reminder of how much of the film’s visual identity came from real locations rather than effects. The glowing desert setting looks almost exactly like the world audiences saw on screen.
Much of ‘Dune: Part Two’ was filmed in Abu Dhabi’s Liwa Desert, which stood in for Arrakis. The production also shot in Jordan and Budapest. Villeneuve and his team spent nearly a month in the UAE, compared with less than a week for the first film.
Scenes were captured at just under 20 locations during the winter of 2022, in a 27-day shoot involving around 300 local crew members, 250 international crew members, and 500 extras.
The production deliberately avoided reusing locations from the first film. Instead, the team ventured deeper into the desert, closer to the Saudi border, using the nearby Qasr Al Sarab resort as a base.
The scale of the operation was enormous. An entire village was reportedly built in the middle of the desert, with more than 1,000 people working on the film. During filming, Zendaya also shared a sunset photo from the location on her Instagram Stories. Reports at the time noted that the glowing sunsets were completely real and required no special effects.

Zendaya has spoken about the challenges of playing Chani in such demanding conditions. In an interview with Collider, she pointed to the scene where Chani sheds a single tear to revive Paul after he drinks the Water of Life as one of the most nerve-wracking to film.
Because the Fremen value water so highly, Chani had to stay composed while still showing deep emotion. Delivering such a subtle performance in the heat of the desert made the scene even more demanding.

The photo arrives as fans look ahead to the trilogy’s conclusion. Filming for ‘Dune: Part Three’ also returned to Abu Dhabi, with the Liwa desert once again serving as Arrakis. The final chapter is set to arrive in theaters on December 18. Chani’s emotional arc is expected to take center stage, giving Zendaya an even bigger role in the saga’s conclusion.

Until then, behind-the-scenes glimpses like this one continue to keep the excitement alive. For many fans, they feel like collector’s items from one of cinema’s most immersive worlds.
