How ‘Chicago P.D.’ Is Handling the Future of Officer Kevin Atwater
Kevin Atwater’s future on ‘Chicago P.D.’ has been a recurring fan question for years, and it now has a clear answer. LaRoyce Hawkins, who plays Atwater, is exiting the NBC procedural in its fourteenth season. The news arrived this summer, and the new season has already begun laying the groundwork.
Atwater has been a fixture of Intelligence for so long that his departure reshapes the unit’s identity. Here is what has been reported about how and why he is leaving, and what it means for the show going forward.
Why Kevin Atwater Leaving Became a Real Question
Speculation picked up steam during the thirteenth season, when Atwater reunited with an old friend, Officer Tasha Fox, and was invited to join her in Miami. The storyline turned romantic quickly, which suggested a possible shift in his personal life. At the time, fans were already weighing whether a move south could be the way out for the character.
The idea gained more weight when Tasha revealed she was expecting a child and that Atwater was the father. He appeared genuinely thrilled and considered relocating to Miami, a choice that could end his run on the show. Even then, nothing had been officially confirmed.
This was not the first time viewers worried. Concern grew once before when Atwater was absent from an entire episode, though no concrete evidence of an exit existed then. Some fans had also misread a social media post marking another departure as Hawkins announcing his own. Those earlier scares proved unfounded, which made the eventual report land differently.
LaRoyce Hawkins Exit Details From the Showrunner
The first word came in an exclusive from Deadline, which reported that Hawkins would leave as a series regular and return to wrap up his character’s story in the first two or three episodes of the new season. The report also noted that the show was casting a new series regular described as a Black cop who is an agent of chaos.
Hawkins is among the longest tenured members of the ensemble. He debuted as Atwater in the series premiere and has been a constant fan favorite across thirteen seasons. That history is part of why the exit feels like more than routine cast turnover.
Showrunner Gwen Sigan has since addressed the door left open for him. In an interview with TV Guide, Sigan said Atwater is still in the world of the show and can come back, pointing to recent returns by Tracy Spiridakos and Jesse Lee Soffer as precedent. She also said the writers wanted to give Atwater something pivotal and well deserved that he had earned.
Atwater Final Episode and What Comes Next
The season premiere set the table. Just as the unit closes its case, Atwater receives a call from Tasha that the baby is coming. Ruzek drives him to the hospital, and the birth story carries into the second episode, which is Atwater’s last.
That final episode airs on October 14 and is titled “Don’t Blink.” NBC describes it as a significant turning point that prompts Atwater to make a decision about his future. The network is billing it as a hero’s final episode.
A promo offers a few clues. It shows Atwater and Tasha at home with their baby, with the character saying the district has been his home for years but that he wants something new. Sigan has praised both the episode and Hawkins’ performance, and she noted that Soffer directed it. Having a former cast member behind the camera gives the farewell a fitting sense of continuity.
Chicago P.D. Cast Changes in Context
Atwater’s exit thins out the show’s founding roster considerably. Jason Beghe, Patrick John Flueger, Marina Squerciati and Amy Morton are the only original cast members left as the season begins. It is the first loss of an original series regular in four seasons, since Soffer left three episodes into the tenth season.
Turnover is hardly new for the franchise. The show has said goodbye to at least one series regular nearly every season going back to the third. Ahead of the thirteenth season, Toya Turner left after one season as Officer Kiana Cook, and Arienne Mandi joined as Officer Eva Imani.
Sigan frames the current season as a period of change. She has described it as one of transition and reinvention, with new characters arriving, including FBI agent Charles Boyd, played by Kyle Selig. Whether that new energy can replace the steady presence Atwater provided is the question hanging over Intelligence, and it leaves open whether a quiet life in Miami with Tasha and their son is the ending you wanted for Atwater or if you were hoping for a more dramatic goodbye.
