‘Girls Trip’ Star Mariah Carey’s Blurry ‘Last Supper’ Selfie Is the Internet’s Newest Masterpiece

Every trip to Milan comes with a checklist of must-see landmarks, from the Duomo to the historic opera house Teatro alla Scala. Few stops carry more weight than Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’, preserved on the wall of the former convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, and it turns out Mariah Carey couldn’t resist paying it a visit either.

The city is hardly new territory for the singer. In February, she performed at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics at Milan’s San Siro Stadium, delivering a medley of the Italian classic ‘Volare’ and her own track ‘Nothing Is Impossible’. She later described that global performance to Vogue as feeling like a dream come true.

This time around, Carey left the stadium behind and headed straight for the Renaissance. On Wednesday, October 7, she shared a slightly blurry selfie posing in front of one of the world’s most recognizable paintings, captioning it simply “The Last Supper,” as she wrote on Instagram, adding heart and sparkle emojis.

The shot is a study in contrasts. Carey wears a completely serious, pursed expression while staring into the camera as the fresco looms behind her. Adding to the comedy, she shares the dimly lit room with several other visitors, and the singer herself appears blurry while da Vinci’s work stays perfectly in focus.

Social media did exactly what you’d expect. “New meme just dropped,” one fan wrote, while another chimed in with “She knows this is gonna be a meme lol.” Others went straight for the wordplay. Comments ranged from “The Last Diva at The Last Supper” to “Even Leonardo was gagging” and “Mariah eating at the Last Supper,” while one follower summed it all up with “TWO MASTERPIECES!”

Even the art world joined in on the fun. In a tongue-in-cheek write-up, Hyperallergic suggested the selfie is on track to become a religious icon, or at least a viral meme, and mused that its off-center composition might say something about the undignified experience of visiting crowded cultural landmarks today. The outlet also playfully praised the brevity of her caption.

The timing of the Italian getaway is no accident. Once she returns, Carey will be preparing for her busiest stretch of the year, having already announced tour dates around the world for her ‘Christmastime’ concert, including stops in the U.K., Brazil and Malta.

Her festive staple ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ first arrived in 1994 and has become practically synonymous with the holidays, returning to playlists and charts year after year. The self-proclaimed Queen of Christmas will no doubt be everywhere again soon enough.

It has also been a year full of milestones for the singer. She celebrated the 30th anniversary of her fifth studio album, ‘Daydream’, with an anniversary edition and an Amazon Music collaboration, and marked 25 years since ‘Glitter’, the 2001 musical romance in which she played a fictionalized version of herself.

On top of that, a year has now passed since the release of her latest album, ‘Here For It All’. Carey hasn’t revealed what brought her back to Milan this week. Whatever the reason, she managed to turn a quiet sightseeing stop into a full-blown internet event, which is something only a handful of pop stars can pull off.
