How ‘Reasonable Doubt’ Resolved the Mystery Behind Wendy’s Death

The question of who killed Wendy on ‘Reasonable Doubt’ hung over the entire third season, which followed Jax Stewart, played by Emayatzy Corinealdi, as she defended former child star Ozzie Edwards. Ozzie was accused of killing his girlfriend Wendy, played by Rumer Willis.

The answer arrived in the finale titled “On to the Next One,” and the reveal changed how viewers understood the Edwards family. The season is streaming on Hulu and Disney+.

The Finale Twist Behind Wendy’s Killer

At Ozzie’s repass, his sister Kristin revealed that their father had actually killed Wendy. The reveal came after the court had already acquitted Ozzie of all charges.

The finale shows that Sal shot Wendy and then suffocated her after she promised to tell Ozzie about his family’s sinister ways, with Kristin helping him finish the job. The details recast the earlier episodes, in which every member of the family looked like a possible suspect.

Early recaps describe a heated argument between Ozzie and Wendy after his parents pushed him to have her sign an NDA, and Wendy was nowhere to be found after that night. The bullet that killed her also came from a gun registered in Ozzie’s name, which made the case against him look strong.

Why Sal Became the Murderer

In an interview with Variety, showrunner Raamla Mohamed said the killer was first going to be Kristin, and the idea later shifted to the mother, Rosie, before the writers settled on Sal.

Mohamed explained that Sal had been emasculated in a household where Rosie is the dominant voice, so Wendy’s arrival gave him a problem he believed he could handle alone. She singled out the moment when Kristin asks whether they should call their mother and Sal says no.

She also reasoned that if Rosie had been the killer, Wendy might never have been found and Ozzie would never have faced a trial. That logic explains why the story needed Sal to act without his wife’s guidance.

Rosie remained a source of suspicion for much of the season, since a recap notes she had made a deal with Alex, the colleague who was blackmailing Ozzie. The same recap says she later told Jax that she felt deep down Ozzie could have killed Wendy. The misdirection kept the murder mystery tangled until the finale.

Ozzie Edwards, the Trial and the Verdict

Ozzie was arrested at the end of the second episode and charged with second degree murder. While defending him, Jax discovered that he had been abused by his manager, Monica, which inadvertently led him to a drug addiction.

Jax’s strategy was built around creating reasonable doubt in the minds of the jury, including the argument that the prosecution could not prove Wendy had been shot. In the end, the court found that the prosecution’s evidence was not enough to prove Ozzie had killed Wendy.

Mohamed said she wanted Jax to have a win after losing the case in the previous season, and that a loss would not have felt satisfying. The verdict gave Jax a personal victory on the legal side.

The win did not last. After the verdict Jax arranged for a rehab facility to pick Ozzie up from her house, and he was found unresponsive in her son’s bedroom and died from an overdose. Mohamed said that ending was always planned and called it bittersweet, because Ozzie was about to figure out who he was as an adult.

What the Finale Means for Jax Stewart

Jax packed up her corner office and started her own law firm after Bill became a partner without her knowledge. The season then ended with a vengeful Monica pointing a gun at Jax and pulling the trigger.

Mohamed said the plan at first was not to show who fired the shot. After watching Brandee Evans’s performance in an earlier episode, she felt the anger would not fade and that Monica would be the one to show up.

The trailer for the new season confirms that Monica shot Jax, leaving her hospitalized and fighting for her life. The series returned on October 6 with three episodes available at launch, opening with Jax fighting for survival while her firm fights to stay intact.

Mohamed said she originally pitched four seasons but is now open to the show running as long as it stays good. If you suspected Sal before Kristin spoke at the repass, the comments are a good place to share which clue gave him away and whether Monica’s attack on Jax felt earned.
