For years, China was a cornerstone of Marvel’s box office dominance. But in the years since ‘Avengers: Endgame’ closed out the Infinity Saga, the market largely went cold for superhero films, with Marvel titles facing intermittent blocks and underwhelming returns even after regulations eased.

That picture started to change this summer. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ opened in China 2 days before its North American debut and earned $121.3 million in its first 5 days, with its opening day becoming the biggest single-day gross for a comic book movie in the country since ‘Endgame’.

Now, early signs suggest ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ could push Marvel’s China comeback even further. On Maoyan, China’s largest online movie-ticketing platform, the film’s “want-to-see” count is closing in on the levels ‘Avengers: Endgame’ reached before its release.

Comparing each film at 69 days before release, ‘Endgame’ had 264K users marking it as want-to-see. ‘Doomsday’ sits at 253K, putting it just 11K shy of the record-breaking 2019 juggernaut.

For further context, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ had 196.8K at the same point in its pre-release cycle. That means ‘Doomsday’ is tracking well ahead of the film that just delivered Hollywood’s strongest superhero opening in China in years.

Maoyan’s data has become an important indicator of how films perform in the Chinese market. The platform projected that ‘Brand New Day’ would earn $255 million over its full run in China, which would make it the biggest Hollywood release in the country since ‘Endgame’.

If ‘Doomsday’ is generating even stronger pre-release interest, expectations are bound to climb. The film was already named the most-anticipated movie of the year in China on Douban, signaling a long-running buildup of excitement.

‘Brand New Day’ also benefited from years of pent-up demand. Its predecessor, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, never played in Chinese theaters after regulators objected to the film’s use of the Statue of Liberty in its climax.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the same duo behind ‘Endgame’, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ brings together heroes from 3 distinct universes facing an existential threat. The Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Wakandans, and New Avengers all unite to take on Doctor Doom.

Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU in a brand-new role as Victor von Doom. The cast also includes Chris Hemsworth, whose Thor returns to the warrior mindset last seen in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’.

The film is the 39th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and part of Phase Six. Its sequel, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, will follow on December 17, 2027, closing out the Multiverse Saga. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens in theaters on December 18, the same day as ‘Dune: Part Three’.

With ‘Dune’ securing IMAX screens early, Marvel created its own Infinity Vision certification to highlight premium screenings of ‘Doomsday’. Tickets are already on sale, and the official trailer released in July teased the massive team-up fans have been waiting for.

The Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con only added to the excitement. The MCU has struggled to maintain its cultural grip in the years since ‘Endgame’, but these Maoyan numbers suggest audiences in China are ready to show up again.

If interest keeps climbing, ‘Doomsday’ could surpass ‘Endgame’ in want-to-see metrics before release day arrives. With more than 2 months to go, the countdown is officially on. Marvel will be hoping that strong pre-release buzz translates into a historic opening.

Do you think ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ can match the success of ‘Avengers: Endgame’?
