New ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ Image Shows the King of the Monsters Scarred and Smoldering
Few modern monster movies have made an impact like Takashi Yamazaki’s ‘Godzilla Minus One’. The 2023 film became an international hit and won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, making it the first Asian film to take home the award.
Its success made a follow-up almost inevitable. Toho announced a new Yamazaki-helmed Godzilla project in November 2024, and the title ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ was revealed at Godzilla Fest 2025, with a logo illustrated by the director himself.
Now, fans have a brand-new look at the creature at the heart of the sequel. A newly released image shows Godzilla in profile against a hazy grey sky, his massive dorsal spines towering above him.
The most striking detail is the damage. Glowing orange and red patches burn across his dark, rugged hide, suggesting a creature that is wounded yet still very much alive. That fits perfectly with what the marketing has teased so far.
The latest trailer opens by confirming that Godzilla was not fully destroyed in the previous film, setting the stage for a new kaiju extermination operation. Godzilla Minus Zero is a direct sequel, set in 1949, 2 years after the events of ‘Godzilla Minus One’. The story continues following the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity.

Several actors from the first film are returning, including Ryunosuke Kamiki. The latest trailer also introduced new characters alongside familiar faces as heroes old and new team up once again. Yamazaki returns as writer, director and visual effects lead. He supervised the film’s effects alongside Takayuki Ueki, Eishin Okubo and Kiyoko Shibuya.
The sequel is aiming for an even more immersive experience. It is the first Japanese production ever filmed for IMAX, shot with IMAX-certified digital cameras and optimized for the format’s sound and imagery.

The film is also reportedly the first in the series to receive an R rating. Earlier trailers showcased the scale of the threat, including footage of soldiers dropping a nuclear bomb on the monster as it rampages again.
Fans got their first full look at Godzilla’s new design in July, when official merchandise was unveiled. The new image gives a closer view of how that design will look on the big screen. ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ held its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 26. Yamazaki and producer Kazuaki Kishida attended the premiere.
The film is distributed in North America by GKIDS, the Academy Award-winning distributor acquired by Toho in 2024. The studio has described the sequel as a supremely satisfying follow-up.

The sequel opens in Japan on November 3, the date known as Godzilla Day. North American audiences will get to see it shortly after, on November 6. With less than a month to go, excitement continues to build. If this smoldering new image is any indication, Godzilla is returning angrier and more battle-scarred than ever.
