‘Sense and Sensibility’ Star Caitríona Balfe Names This Character as the Ultimate Jane Austen Boyfriend
Few literary debates have lasted quite as long as the question of who is the best Jane Austen boyfriend. Brooding Mr. Darcy usually wins the popularity contests, Captain Wentworth has devoted fans thanks to his famous letter, and quieter heroes like Henry Tilney have their passionate defenders.
The conversation is back in full force this fall. Georgia Oakley’s new adaptation of ‘Sense and Sensibility’ opened in the UK on September 25 and arrives in US theaters on October 16, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of Austen’s birth.
At the film’s Los Angeles premiere on October 7 at the United Artists Theatre, TheWrap asked cast member Caitríona Balfe to weigh in on the age-old question. The ‘Outlander’ star, who plays Mrs. Dashwood in the film, took a moment to consider the options before landing on her answer.
Balfe ultimately chose Colonel Brandon, the steady and devoted suitor from ‘Sense and Sensibility’ itself. It’s a fitting pick for an actress promoting the very story in which he appears.
Her choice also puts her in good company. Colonel Brandon has long had a loyal following among Austen fans, many of whom argue that he outshines the story’s more obvious romantic hero.

In Austen’s novel, Brandon is the calm, quiet, and practical man who falls for Marianne Dashwood and eventually wins her love. Fans have long admired his patience and quiet devotion compared to the more dashing but unreliable John Willoughby.
‘Sense and Sensibility’ is a particularly interesting battleground for the debate. It offers 3 very different suitors in Edward Ferrars, Brandon and Willoughby, with 2 of them genuinely worth rooting for.

Brandon was memorably played by Alan Rickman in Ang Lee’s celebrated 1995 adaptation. In Oakley’s new version, the role goes to Herbert Nordrum, known for ‘The Worst Person in the World’.
Daisy Edgar-Jones leads the film as the sensible Elinor Dashwood, while Esmé Creed-Miles plays her sensitive sister, Marianne. Balfe portrays their widowed mother, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach plays the youngest sister, Margaret.

George MacKay stars as Edward Ferrars, Frank Dillane plays Willoughby, and Fiona Shaw appears as the meddlesome Mrs. Jennings. Diana Reid wrote the screenplay from Austen’s 1811 novel.
The story follows the Dashwood women after their father dies and leaves his estate to a male relative. Forced to leave their home, they move into a modest cottage and face both financial hardship and romantic heartbreak.

The film is a co-production of Working Title and Focus Features, the team behind 2005’s ‘Pride & Prejudice’ and 2020’s ‘Emma’. Cast members have said the new version isn’t trying to compete with Ang Lee’s classic, instead offering a fresh look at the material.
TheWrap’s review praised Oakley’s adaptation as enchanting, earthy, and humorous. The critic noted that she finds more melancholy than usual beneath Austen’s wit, highlighting the daily struggles facing women of the era.

The film marks Balfe’s first major role since ‘Outlander’ concluded earlier this year. Playing a loving, practical mother offers a very different kind of romance from the one fans know her for.
Balfe attended the LA premiere in a custom grey gown as part of a press tour where cast members have embraced method dressing. The tour previously stopped at Dublin’s Stella Cinema in September.
‘Sense and Sensibility’ arrives amid what fans are calling an Austen renaissance. Netflix’s upcoming ‘Pride and Prejudice’ miniseries, starring Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden, will give viewers another chance to compare Austen’s heroes side by side. For now, Balfe has cast her vote firmly for Brandon. Whether audiences agree may depend on how Nordrum’s take on the character lands when the film opens nationwide.
