Fox’s ‘Baywatch’ Reboot Trailer Brings Back the Slow-Mo, the Red Swimsuits and a New Buchannon

Few TV shows are as instantly recognizable as ‘Baywatch’, a syndicated lifeguard drama that ran for 11 seasons from 1989 to 2001 and turned Pamela Anderson and Yasmine Bleeth into household names. Its first season debuted on NBC before getting canceled, only to be revived and thrive in syndication. Now Fox’s ‘Baywatch’ reboot is hoping to bring that magic back for a new generation.

The revival has been a long time coming. Fox originally hoped to have it ready for fall, but the network later pushed the premiere to late January, positioning it as a midseason launch. Cameras rolled earlier this year, with the cast photographed running along Venice Beach in March.

On October 13, Fox finally released the full-length trailer, and it leans hard into nostalgia. The roughly 3-minute preview is set to the original theme song, “I’m Always Here,” and features a small plane crash, a wildfire in the hills near the beach, an exploding lifeguard tower, and plenty of drama among the team.

The footage kicks off with a rescue after a plane collides with a parasail, and there’s no shortage of slow-motion beach running or signature red swimsuits. Earlier this month, Fox had also dropped 4 shorter teaser promos pairing up members of the cast.

Stephen Amell of ‘Arrow’ fame leads the series as Hobie Buchannon, a role previously played by Jeremy Jackson in the original. Hobie is now a Baywatch captain following in the footsteps of his father, Mitch, the character David Hasselhoff made famous.

His life gets turned upside down when Charlie Vale, the daughter he never knew, played by Jessica Belkin, shows up on his doorstep wanting to carry on the family legacy. That makes the show feel more like a sequel than a straight remake.

Hobie’s team includes Hassie Harrison from ‘Yellowstone’ as Nat, Shay Mitchell from ‘Pretty Little Liars’ as Trina, newcomer Thaddeus LaGrone as Brad, Noah Beck from ‘Sidelined’ as Luke, and Brooks Nader from ‘Love Thy Nader’ as Selene. Mary McDonnell and John Beckwith also appear in recurring roles as Gayle and Julian.

Former LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne makes her acting debut as junior lifeguard Grace. Speaking to TV Insider, Dunne acknowledged that “the biggest difference is there’s not the original, iconic cast,” while praising the new ensemble.

Longtime fans won’t be left out, either. David Chokachi reprises his role as Cody Madison in a recurring capacity, while Erika Eleniak guest stars as Shauni McClain. Original stars Michael Bergin and Kelly Packard are also set to make guest appearances. Those cameos should give the revival a welcome dose of continuity with the classic series.

The series is co-produced by Fox Entertainment and Fremantle, with Matt Nix of ‘Burn Notice’ and ‘The Gifted’ serving as showrunner and executive producer. McG directs the premiere episode, and the first season received a straight-to-series order for 12 episodes.

The show has also been making waves at MIPCOM in Cannes, where Amell and Nader have been promoting it. Overseas, Prime Video picked up the reboot for several territories, along with the complete original series catalog.

The trailer quickly racked up attention online, with some fans unable to resist jokes about Amell’s past as a superhero. One viewer quipped that a writer must be fighting the urge to give him a “you have failed this beach” line.

Whether the new version can capture the cultural impact of the original remains to be seen, but it clearly isn’t straying far from the formula. The ‘Baywatch’ reboot premieres in January on Fox, with episodes streaming the next day on Hulu.
