Zombie shows rarely stay buried for long, and ‘Z Nation’ has always been one of the genre’s strangest and most beloved survivors. The horror comedy-drama, created by Karl Schaefer and Craig Engler and produced by The Asylum, ran on Syfy from 2014 to 2018, delivering 68 episodes of undead chaos across 5 seasons.

The world it built didn’t end there, either. Netflix’s prequel ‘Black Summer’ took a much darker, less comedic approach across 2 seasons and 16 episodes between 2019 and 2021, while fans have spent years hoping the original crew would get one more ride.

Now that wish is coming true. The Asylum, the company behind ‘Sharknado’, is bringing the franchise back with a sequel series titled ‘Z Nation: Resurrection’, which The Hollywood Reporter broke as an exclusive.

The new show is set in the same zombie-infested world, several years after the events of the original series. This time, a new undead threat emerges that could wipe out what’s left of humanity.

While ‘Z Nation: Resurrection’ will center on a new generation of survivors, longtime fans have reason to get excited. Kellita Smith’s Warren, Keith Allan’s Murphy, Russell Hodgkinson’s Doc, and DJ Qualls’ Citizen Z are all in talks to appear in supporting roles.

It’s worth stressing that none of those returns are locked in yet. Still, the prospect of seeing the old crew back in the apocalypse is a big deal for anyone who stuck with the show through its full run.

The Asylum is partnering with Vital Signs Entertainment, the production company founded by former Syfy executive Thomas P. Vitale, on a 10-episode first season. The Asylum’s David Michael Latt and Paul Bales are executive producing alongside co-founder David Rimawi and Vitale.

The project is being shopped to international buyers at the MIPCOM television market in Cannes this week. That means a network or streaming home hasn’t been announced just yet.

The people behind the revival say the demand never faded. “‘Z Nation’ has never really gone away,” Asylum co-founder David Rimawi told The Hollywood Reporter, adding that the new series lets them return to familiar characters while taking the story somewhere bigger, darker and more unpredictable.

Vitale echoed that excitement, saying the original series connected with viewers because it was “fearless, funny, and never afraid to surprise people.” He added that the sequel aims to expand the mythology and push the franchise in new directions. The revival didn’t come out of nowhere. In March 2024, The Asylum shared a post on X that fans took as a hint that a sixth season might be in the works.

Then, in August 2025, Keith Allan himself pitched an animated sequel idea called ‘Z Nation: Reborn’ in a short video, urging fans to sign a petition to show there was real demand for more. That kind of grassroots enthusiasm clearly kept the franchise on The Asylum’s radar.

The news also arrives after a quieter ending for the franchise’s prequel. According to What’s on Netflix, the streamer effectively ghost-canceled ‘Black Summer’, leaving its story without a third season.

With that series seemingly finished, ‘Z Nation: Resurrection’ now stands as the franchise’s best shot at continuing on screen. For fans who preferred the original’s offbeat blend of horror and comedy, a return to that tone could be exactly what they’ve been waiting for. The original ‘Z Nation’ has also found new audiences over the years, including through a free release on YouTube.

That kind of renewed attention could help the sequel find a home with buyers looking for a series with a built-in fanbase. Details like casting, a release window, and a platform are still to come. But after years of rumors and fan campaigns, the zombie apocalypse is officially back on the menu.

Are you excited for Z Nation: Resurrection to bring the cult zombie series back?
