Few sci-fi franchises cast a shadow quite like ‘The X-Files’, the beloved Fox drama that turned paranormal investigations into appointment television. For years, fans have wondered what a modern take might look like, and Ryan Coogler’s ‘X-Files’ reboot has been one of the most closely watched projects in development.

The road to this point has been a long one. The effort began more than 3 years ago, when original creator Chris Carter revealed on a 2023 podcast that Coogler was planning to remount the show with a diverse cast, and Hulu ordered a pilot in February that went on to film from May to June.

Now the case is officially open. Hulu announced on Tuesday that it has picked up Coogler’s reimagining of ‘The X-Files’ to series, ending months of uncertainty after the pilot wrapped.

The new show will stream on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+. A premiere date and episode count have not been announced yet. Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel lead the series as 2 highly decorated but very different FBI agents.

They form an unlikely bond after being assigned to a long-shuttered division that handles cases involving unexplained phenomena. Importantly, the pair are playing entirely new characters rather than updated versions of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

The project also reunites Deadwyler and Patel, who previously starred together in ‘Station Eleven’. The pilot features a lineup of notable guest stars, including Steve Buscemi and Amy Madigan. Their involvement adds even more intrigue to an already high-profile debut episode.

Deadwyler is known for ‘Till’ and ‘The Piano Lesson’, while Patel’s credits include ‘Yesterday’ and a supporting role in ‘The Odyssey’. Together, they give the reboot a pair of acclaimed leads to carry the franchise into its next era.

Coogler, the filmmaker behind ‘Sinners’, wrote, directed, and executive produced the pilot through his Proximity Media banner. Jennifer Yale, known for ‘Your Friends & Neighbors’, will serve as showrunner and executive producer for the series.

Chris Carter is on board as an executive producer, alongside Proximity’s Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. Simone Harris of Proximity Media, Deadwyler, and Patel serve as co-executive producers, while Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson created the pilot’s score.

In a statement announcing the order, Coogler said he has long loved ‘The X-Files’ and that writing and directing the pilot has meant a great deal to him. He also praised Deadwyler, Patel and the rest of the cast for bringing original perspectives to their characters.

The series comes from Onyx Collective and 20th Television. The order falls under Coogler’s exclusive 5-year television deal with Disney, which owns Hulu, 20th Television and Onyx Collective.

One of the biggest lingering questions is whether any original cast members could appear. The official synopsis implies the new series takes place after the original show, which has led to speculation about possible returns from David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, or Mitch Pileggi.

For now, neither Duchovny nor Anderson knows whether their characters exist in this new timeline. Still, both have signaled they’d happily take a call from Coogler if he ever reaches out.

The order also stands out given Hulu’s recent decisions. Just a few months ago, the streamer passed on Chloé Zhao’s ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ reboot, making this greenlight a clear vote of confidence in Coogler’s vision.

With the series now moving beyond the pilot stage, fans will be watching for news on a premiere date and how Hulu positions the show against the original’s massive legacy. Whether Deadwyler and Patel follow the classic believer and skeptic dynamic remains one of the most intriguing questions.
