‘Girls’ Is Officially Coming Back as Lena Dunham Reunites the Original Cast at HBO

Few TV comedies defined a cultural moment quite like ‘Girls’, Lena Dunham’s frank, often divisive look at messy twentysomething life in New York. The HBO series premiered on April 15, 2012, after its first 3 episodes screened at SXSW, and ran for 6 seasons and 62 episodes before wrapping up in 2017.

When the show ended, Hannah Horvath had left New York City and given birth to a baby boy named Grover. For years, a return seemed unlikely, and as recently as 2022 HBO said there were no plans to bring the series back, with Dunham agreeing that the time wasn’t right.

That has now changed in a big way. HBO announced on Tuesday that ‘Girls’ will return for a limited 5-episode run, with production set to begin in 2027, a full decade after the Season 6 finale.

Dunham returns as Hannah alongside Allison Williams as Marnie Michaels, Jemima Kirke as Jessa Johansson, and Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro. Andrew Rannells is also back as Elijah Krantz, completing the core group of friends.

In a statement, Dunham explained that the cast always agreed they would only come back if there was a specific story worth telling. She admitted she had missed the characters but couldn’t picture them in the present day until they started talking to her again around her 40th birthday in May.

Dunham described the revival as a rare chance to revisit something life-changing with the benefit of hindsight and gratitude. She also thanked HBO and the fans who have continued to discover the series, reminding the team why they love working together.

To mark the announcement, Dunham and her former castmates reunited in a video released on October 13. In the clip, she asks the group whether they’d want to make ‘Girls’ again next summer.

Everyone signs on, with Rannells joking that he’s only in because the others need constant supervision. Dunham also poked fun at whether the show can still be called ‘Girls’ now that the cast is older.

HBO’s head of comedy programming, Amy Gravitt, said the network is thrilled to see Dunham shift her focus from the chaos of one’s twenties to the milestone of turning 40. She added that the world has changed dramatically since viewers last saw these characters, but fans will be relieved to find they’re still the people they remember.

No premiere date or plot details have been announced yet. All 6 original seasons are currently streaming on HBO Max for anyone who wants to catch up before the revival arrives.

Judd Apatow returns as an executive producer on behalf of Apatow Productions. Dunham will also executive produce alongside Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen of her company Good Thing Going.

Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells are all serving as co-executive producers. That gives the original cast a bigger creative stake in the series than ever before. Not everyone from the original series is returning. Adam Driver, who starred as Adam, is notably absent from the announcement, as is Jenni Konner, who served as co-showrunner and executive producer on the original run.

Both were discussed in Dunham’s memoir ‘Famesick’, released in April. The original series also featured Christopher Abbott, Alex Karpovsky, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jake Lacy, none of whom have been announced for the revival.

With a much shorter episode order, the revival appears designed as a focused check-in rather than a full continuation. The emphasis on turning 40 suggests the story will explore how Hannah and her friends have grown, or failed to grow, over the past decade.

For longtime viewers, the chance to see this group together again is likely the biggest draw. Whether the revival recaptures the original’s sharp, uncomfortable humor will be the big question once cameras start rolling.
