Paladin in ‘VisionQuest’ Brings a Little-Known Marvel Mercenary to the MCU Through Todd Stashwick
The bounty placed on Vision’s head is what brings Paladin into the story, a mercenary for hire with a long but sparsely detailed history in Marvel Comics. For viewers who have never opened a Paladin comic, Paladin in ‘VisionQuest’ is likely to be one of the series’ more unfamiliar faces. That makes it worth looking at who the character is and why Marvel chose him.
‘VisionQuest’ premieres on Disney+ on October 14. The character is set to make his live action debut in the series, portrayed by Todd Stashwick. Here is what the comics, the casting announcements and the early coverage say about the role.
Paladin Comic Book History and Marvel Origins
Paladin was created by writer Jim Shooter and artist Carmine Infantino, and first appeared in the pages of ‘Daredevil’ #150. He often uses the alias Paul Denning and is a mercenary equipped with bulletproof armor, a stun gun and an infrared vision helmet. The character was inspired by a 1950s Western television series.
Marvel’s own description of the character states that virtually nothing is known about the background of the man behind the name. He has nonetheless turned up as an occasional guest star in titles such as ‘Heroes for Hire,’ ‘Thunderbolts,’ ‘X-Men’ and ‘The Defenders.’ One German outlet noted that he does not even have a card in the mobile game ‘Marvel Snap,’ which says something about how far he sits from the center of the Marvel universe.
In ‘Marvel Team-Up’ #108, Paladin allied with Spider-Man and Wasp against mobsters. He respected Spider-Man’s abilities but laughed in his face upon learning that the hero works for free, while Spider-Man was disgusted by Paladin’s mercenary ways. That clash of values is the clearest picture the comics offer of who Paladin is, a professional who treats heroism as a job rather than a calling.
Todd Stashwick Casting and the Boba Fett Comparison
Stashwick was added to the cast in September 2024, and The Hollywood Reporter said at the time that he would play an assassin on the trail of the android and the technology he possesses. A report in May 2025 later claimed the role was Paladin, though it was treated as a rumor until Marvel confirmed it.
TrekMovie reported that showrunner Terry Matalas and Stashwick said at a Star Trek convention panel that Marvel had given them official permission to reveal the role. Matalas described the character as sort of the Boba Fett of the Marvel Universe, and Stashwick agreed that Paladin is a badass.
Stashwick also called Paladin a deep cut character, noting that he is an avid ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ player and that both Captain Shaw in ‘Picard’ and Deacon in ’12 Monkeys’ would be Paladin class characters. That is a useful clue to the performance, since both of those roles were gruff figures with a code of their own, and Stashwick appears to see Paladin in the same light.
VisionQuest Bounty Hunter Storyline
The bounty on Vision is what draws Paladin into the series. According to the German outlet Mein MMO, the android carries expensive and dangerous technology belonging to S.W.O.R.D., which gives a hunter like Paladin a clear reason to pursue him. That motive fits the comics character, who has always been defined by the job rather than by any grand ideology.
The series is described as the final chapter in a trilogy that includes ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Agatha All Along,’ and was created and showrun by Terry Matalas. It is the 18th television installment in the MCU and a key piece of Phase Six. Paladin arrives, then, as an outside threat in what is otherwise a story about Vision’s own identity.
The same outlet pointed out that Vision is one of the more powerful Avengers and can shrug off gunfire, so Paladin will likely need to rely on tricks and traps rather than brute force. That is an observation about how the pursuit may play out and not a confirmed plot detail. It does suggest a hunter who wins through preparation, which is a good match for a character known for gadgets and armor.
Paladin’s Associate and the Wider VisionQuest Cast
Diane Morgan, best known for her deadpan comedy in ‘Cunk on Earth,’ takes on a dramatic Marvel role as a character identified only as Paladin’s associate. Details remain under wraps, but the role suggests her character will work closely with Paladin. A partner for a mercenary who is otherwise defined by working alone is an interesting addition.
Paul Bettany returns as Vision and James Spader returns as Ultron. T’Nia Miller plays Jocasta, whose appearance is the character’s first in live action. Jocasta is also described as Ultron’s bride, which is one of the stranger corners of Avengers lore.
The series is made up of eight episodes. That is a compact run for a cast this large, so Paladin will have limited screen time to establish himself. If Paladin really is the Boba Fett of the Marvel universe, are you rooting for the hunter and his associate or for the android they are chasing in ‘VisionQuest’?
