How ‘VisionQuest’ Finds Its Footing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Timeline
The Disney+ series ‘VisionQuest’ premieres on October 14 and closes out a trilogy of Marvel Television projects that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued with ‘Agatha All Along’. Showrunner Terry Matalas has described the show as the third part of that trilogy while stressing it is very much a sequel to ‘WandaVision’. Paul Bettany returns as Vision, who is now trying to restore his soul and fit in among humanity while wrestling with memories left behind after Wanda’s death.
The question of ‘VisionQuest’ timeline placement has followed the project for years. Fans have been asking where White Vision went ever since ‘WandaVision’ ended and he flew off to a destination no one knew. Matalas has now given a clearer answer in an interview with Polygon, and it ties the series to one of Marvel’s biggest recent theatrical releases.
‘VisionQuest’ Timeline Placement in the MCU
Speaking with Polygon, Matalas explained that years have passed since ‘WandaVision’. He added that the show is roughly current with the latest Spider-Man film, ‘Brand New Day’. That makes the new series a story told well after the events fans last saw Vision in.
The gap is larger than it might first appear. ‘Agatha All Along’ is set in Fall 2026, which is three years after ‘WandaVision’. One Italian outlet places ‘VisionQuest’ about thirteen years after the events of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, which gives a sense of how far the character has traveled.
Matalas laid some groundwork for this earlier in the year. On a May 20 appearance on The Sackhoff Show, he said the series follows the character and journey that began when Vision was rebuilt, accepted who he was, and flew off. The time jump gives that journey room to unfold away from the main action of the franchise.
A Sequel to the ‘WandaVision’ Trilogy
Because so much time has passed, the series is not a direct continuation of the final scene in the Hex. Matalas says the world has not seen Vision flying around for some time, and that he has been spending time among human beings and deciding what it means to be human. In his words, Vision is questioning what it means to be Vision at this moment.
That setup also explains why the project leans on the past. Bettany’s Vision will share scenes with James Spader’s Ultron and with a new android named Jocasta, played by T’Nia Miller. Marvel has also confirmed that Tommy Maximoff will appear, played by Ruaridh Mollica.
Creative freedom appears to have been part of the process. Matalas told IGN at New York Comic Con that Marvel gave him a blank slate for what happens to Vision after ‘WandaVision’, with the one fixed requirement being that Vision reunites with his son. IGN also reports that early reactions to the screening of the first episode were positive.
The Link to ‘Brand New Day’
‘Brand New Day’ is set four years after ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, which places it in 2028. By extension, ‘VisionQuest’ occupies that same general window. That makes it one of the latest-set stories in the franchise ahead of the upcoming Avengers crossover.
The comparison is notable given how the Spider-Man film has performed. ‘Brand New Day’ has reportedly crossed 2.4 billion dollars at the worldwide box office. Sharing a timeframe with a release of that scale gives the streaming series a visible anchor point in the wider franchise.
One analysis reads the choice as a statement about Marvel Television’s place in the larger plan. It argues that Marvel increasingly uses timeline placement as a storytelling tool, and that the pairing signals Disney+ shows are woven into the cinematic universe rather than sitting in a separate sandbox. That interpretation is not confirmed by the studio, but it fits how the series has been positioned.
What It Means for ‘Doomsday’
The 2028 setting also brings the series close to the next major crossover. ‘Brand New Day’ takes place in the same in-universe year as the upcoming ‘Avengers’ film ‘Doomsday’, so the show sits closely within the events leading toward the incursions. Cinefilos suggests this could give ‘VisionQuest’ more weight in Phase 6 than it first seemed to carry.
Whether Vision will actually appear in that film remains open. Marvel has not confirmed his involvement in the next event film. Bettany has said the series ends on a note that works as an exciting springboard for what Vision might do in the future.
For viewers worried about homework, the producers appear to have planned for that. Matalas has said audiences will be brought up to speed quickly on earlier events and do not need to catch up on every related series. Another outlet notes that viewers do not need to rewatch the more than sixty Marvel productions to prepare for the premiere. If Vision really is stepping back toward the center of the franchise just as ‘Doomsday’ approaches, which unresolved piece of his story from ‘WandaVision’ do you most want the series to answer first?
