‘RJ Decker’ Season 2 Episode 5 Recap and Ending Explained: Reggie Heads Out as a Cruel Prank Unravels
The latest ‘RJ Decker’ installment, “Better Luck Tomorrow,” sends R.J. and his dad to a senior living community to find out who has been gaslighting a caretaker who believes he is living the same day in a loop. The episode aired on ABC on Tuesday, October 13, and runs from 10 to 11 p.m.
This ‘RJ Decker’ recap walks through the case of the week, explains how the supposed glitch was taken apart, and looks at what the closing scenes mean for R.J. and his father. The ending resolves the mystery quickly, but it leaves a few personal threads hanging as the season moves toward its final stretch.
Episode Recap of the Senior Living Time Loop Mystery
The episode introduces Sammy, who has schizophrenia and is doing well, yet is convinced he keeps reliving a day in order to save his neighbor Burt, whose boat explodes during a night ride. R.J. takes the job because he is sure someone is pranking Sammy, and he borrows Wish’s camera to catch the culprit.
R.J. learns that Sammy’s sister Lila might take over the elderly home if Sammy is hospitalized again. That night Sammy brings Lila and R.J. to the beach to watch Burt “die,” and Burt’s boat explodes while the two argue over whether Sammy needs to return to the hospital.
Reggie offers to help with the case, and he and R.J. spend a day working out how the prankster is pulling off the tricks, most of which turn out to be easy to explain, such as messing with Sammy’s internet and timer. During a stakeout Reggie reveals that he is thinking of becoming a private investigator like his son.
Ending Explained as the Prankster Is Exposed
Suspicion first lands on Lila and a nearby hotel company after Sammy lets slip that it has made an offer to buy the property. R.J. confronts the hotel owner, Terry, who claims he is innocent.
On a return trip to the beach, R.J. sees that Burt is actually on the boat, but he jumps in too late to save him. He later learns that Burt was dead before the bomb went off and had been killed that afternoon. The episode makes clear that none of it was a glitch and that somebody was behind every event.
Burt’s girlfriend points Mel toward expensive gift cards he had been receiving, and R.J. links one of them to Terry’s hotel company. R.J. then sneaks into Terry’s office, where the evidence leads him to Mark, the homeowner who tased him earlier. Mark is deeply in debt, has tried to sell his house four times, and works as a stagehand at a local theater company. Reggie’s idea to spray his fishing products on Sammy’s car then provides proof that Mark tampered with it.
Reggie Decker and the Father and Son Dynamic
Beau Bridges plays Reggie Decker, R.J.’s estranged father, in the second season. In the previous episode the two reached a turning point in their relationship after discovering they enjoyed working together to uncover a pair of murderers.
That progress carries into this installment, where R.J. tells Catherine he is worried his father is unhappy and that becoming a private investigator will not fix it. He later suggests that Reggie visit his other children and help them with child care.
Bridges has said the pair will come to appreciate aspects of each other while still finding some habits tiresome. He added that both men feel grateful for another chance to connect as father and son. That balance of affection and irritation is what the closing scenes lean on.
What the Episode Means for R.J. and Trudy
The episode ends with Reggie leaving to visit his other son, Tommy, and encouraging R.J. to call Trudy. Trudy has already made her interest in R.J. plain by bringing him dry clothes at the police station, where she also meets Reggie.
One reviewer rated the episode 3.5 and said the writers are taking their time with the romance, adding that the slow pace could become frustrating if nothing comes of it. Whether that patience pays off may depend on how the show handles Emi in the remaining hours.
The season has only seven episodes, which leaves two to go, and the trailer for the next one shows R.J. working with Emi to save a young man accused of murder. The upcoming installments are titled “Blame It on the Rain” and “Before You Accuse Me.” If you think R.J. should finally call Trudy now that Reggie has left town, or you believe Emi still has the stronger claim on him heading into the finale, the comments are open for your case.
