Sacha Baron Cohen Turns the ‘Ali G: Who Iz I?’ Premiere Into a Bright Yellow Spectacle
Few comedy characters have lasted as long as Ali G. Sacha Baron Cohen’s tracksuit-wearing creation first appeared on ‘The 11 O’Clock Show’ in 1998, went on to 3 seasons of ‘Da Ali G Show’ and headlined the 2002 movie ‘Ali G Indahouse’.
After more than 2 decades away from the big screen, Ali G is back. Cohen has spent the year building anticipation for ‘Ali G: Who Iz I?’, and this week the hype reached Hollywood.
Cohen showed up in full character at the Los Angeles premiere of ‘Ali G: Who Iz I?’, in videos shared by Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. True to form, he didn’t just walk the carpet. He performed as Ali G, posing and clowning for cameras in front of the Amazon MGM Studios backdrop.
The look was classic Ali G with an oversized twist. He wore a bright yellow puffer coat with a long train, matching yellow pants, a yellow beanie, tinted sunglasses, and chunky gold chains. A second Ali G-styled figure in a glossy blue puffer and red beanie stood nearby, while a woman in a teal scale-pattern bodysuit joined the pose.
The premiere is the latest step in an unusual campaign. ‘Ali G: Who Iz I?’ was shot in secret, and it marks Cohen’s feature directorial debut. He also wrote and produced the film through his company, Four by Two Films.

The project sees Ali G return to the mockumentary style that made ‘Borat’ a phenomenon. That’s a change from ‘Ali G Indahouse’, which was a fully scripted comedy. The new film is Cohen’s first docu-comedy since ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’ in 2020.
In the new movie, Ali G learns that his longtime girlfriend, Julie, played by Morgana Robinson, is 8 months pregnant. He then heads to the U.S. to reclaim his former glory and runs into people who threaten his and his child’s safety.

The first trailer, released in August, shows Ali G causing chaos in new documentary-style scenes. It also suggests the film will take aim at TikTok and influencer culture, a natural target for a character built on cluelessness and bravado.
Cohen has kept the character in the news all year. In July, he appeared as Ali G at the Wimbledon men’s final before announcing the title and October release date in an in-character Instagram video.

The promotion grew even bigger in London, where about 300 Ali G look-alikes took over the city, stopping at the Thames, Big Ben, Marble Arch, and a McDonald’s and the Cineworld in Leicester Square. The LA premiere feels like the payoff for months of eye-catching stunts.

Cohen has revived the character before. In 2024, he brought back Ali G on ‘The Tonight Show’ to moderate a mock debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, proving the character can still get a reaction from audiences.
That staying power is a big part of why fans are excited. Ali G connected with viewers because his absurd interviews exposed something real about the people he was talking to, and the mockumentary format suits that approach.
‘Ali G: Who Iz I?’ opens in theaters on October 23 from Amazon MGM Studios. It arrives on a crowded weekend alongside ‘Clayface’, ‘Wildwood’ and ‘Klara and the Sun’. If the premiere is any sign, Cohen plans to keep playing Ali G at every chance he gets before release. Whether the film can recapture the impact of his earlier mockumentaries is something audiences will find out next week.
Bringing back a character from the late 1990s is a gamble, but Cohen has done it before. Pointing Ali G at influencer culture and social media could give the character a fresh angle for a new generation. Fans who grew up quoting him will be curious to see how he handles the TikTok era.
