For most of the last decade, Denis Villeneuve has been living in the deserts of Arrakis. The Canadian filmmaker has spent years bringing Frank Herbert’s sci-fi saga to the screen, and his journey comes to an end with ‘Dune: Part Three’, which opens in theaters on December 18.

After that, he moves into another iconic franchise. In June 2025, Amazon MGM Studios officially hired Villeneuve to direct the next James Bond film, the first 007 movie developed under Amazon MGM’s creative control.

Villeneuve has now explained why he picked 007 as his post-‘Dune’ project. Speaking to Empire, he described how much he needed a big creative shift after finishing the sci-fi trilogy.

“I thought, ‘When it’s done, I need a very powerful rocket to pull me away from Arrakis,'” Villeneuve said. “When I was asked to do the next Bond, I said: ‘Okay, this is what I need.'” The comments came as Villeneuve discussed the end of his ‘Dune’ trilogy. He has described ‘Part Three’ as a very different movie from the first 2 films, with a new pace, while still keeping the core DNA of the saga.

He has also said he wants to approach each project rigorously rather than playing it safe. That mindset should matter as he takes on one of the most famous franchises in film history.

Villeneuve won’t be working alone. Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing, and Tanya Lapointe is executive producer. Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson remain co-owners of the rights in a joint venture with Amazon MGM Studios.

Steven Knight, creator of ‘Peaky Blinders’, was announced as screenwriter on July 31, 2025. In September 2026, Knight said the first draft was complete, although it will likely change through further discussions with Villeneuve and the producers.

The biggest question is who will follow Daniel Craig, whose final Bond film was ‘No Time to Die’ in 2021. Casting director Nina Gold began the search in spring 2026, according to reports.

Deadline reported that the filmmakers want an unknown British actor in his late 20s or early 30s. In May 2026, Amazon MGM denied that anyone had been cast, so any names circulating online are still speculation.

The film still has no official title or release date and is widely referred to as ‘Bond 26’. Reports suggest production could begin in 2027, with a release targeted for November 2028. At CinemaCon, Amazon MGM film head Courtenay Valenti said the project was on track. With Knight’s draft done and casting underway, the pieces are slowly coming together.

Before Bond, Villeneuve still has to finish his work on ‘Dune’. ‘Part Three’ stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Jason Momoa, Anya Taylor-Joy and Robert Pattinson, and adapts the next chapter of Paul Atreides’ story.

The finale arrives with huge expectations, including a 3-week IMAX exclusivity window and strong advance ticket demand. Once its run ends, Villeneuve can turn fully to 007. Villeneuve’s description of Bond as his escape from Arrakis suggests he sees the franchise as both a fresh challenge and a creative reset.

After the scale of his ‘Dune’ films, he seems eager to bring the same ambition to a very different world. For fans of both Villeneuve and Bond, the pairing is one of the most exciting director choices in years.

Do you think Denis Villeneuve is the right director to lead the next James Bond movie?
