‘Crystal Lake’ Showrunner Already Has a Plan for More, and He Wants It To Feel Like ‘Twin Peaks’

Few horror franchises have a hometown as infamous as ‘Friday the 13th’, and Peacock’s ‘Crystal Lake’ finally gives fans a long look at it. All 8 episodes of the prequel series premiered on Peacock on October 15, marking the first live-action expansion of the slasher saga in more than a decade.

Created, written, and showrun by Brad Caleb Kane, whose credits include ‘It: Welcome to Derry’, ‘Tokyo Vice’ and ‘Warrior’, the series stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees. It follows the single mother as she grieves her young son Jason, who drowned in the town lake almost a year earlier, until 2 strangers arrive at her door asking about her past.

Peacock hasn’t renewed the series yet, but Kane already knows where the story would go next. In an exclusive interview with Dread Central, he revealed he wants to expand the town “in sort of a ‘Twin Peaks’ David Lynch style.”

Kane was careful to build the first season so it could stand on its own. He said he designed it so that “it will at least feel like a satisfying whole” if the show doesn’t get another season.

That doesn’t mean he’s out of ideas. “At the same time, I know where season two goes. There are more stories to tell in Crystal Lake,” he explained, adding that he knows exactly what his “diving off point” for a second season would be.

He has already mapped out the broad strokes, too. “I have the general contours of a season. People just have to watch the first one, and then maybe we’ll get the opportunity,” Kane said.

The ‘Twin Peaks’ comparison comes down to the town itself. Kane sees plenty of untapped potential in the people who live around the lake, beyond Pam and Jason. “These are great peripheral characters that are not really fully explored in the movies,” he said. He also pointed to the show’s setting as fertile ground: “It’s Jersey in the mid-’70s. There was a lot going on then.”

Coverage of Kane’s plans suggests a second season would lean into supporting townspeople like Ralph, Dorff, and Trudy while keeping Pam and Jason at the center. It would move closer to the timeline of the original 1980 film without immediately overlapping with it.

The series already plays with characters fans will recognize. Nick Cordileone appears as an earlier version of Crazy Ralph, while Danielle Kotch plays Claudette and Phoenix Parnevik plays Barry. Callum Vinson takes on the role of a young Jason.

The franchise’s roots run deep behind the camera as well. Victor Miller, who wrote the original ‘Friday the 13th’, serves as an executive producer, and directors Michael Lennox, Celine Held, Logan George and Quyen Tran split the season’s episodes.

Early reaction has been encouraging. Dread Central’s own review gave the season 3.5 out of 5, calling it a campy, cruel love letter to ’80s slashers. Kane also revealed he’s open to taking the franchise to the big screen. “I had discussions with the Jason Universe people about doing it,” he said. “If that’s a possibility, then yeah, I would love to.”

He acknowledged that film is a different beast for a TV showrunner. “Movies, however, belong to the director,” he noted, before adding that his plate is already full: “I’m a little busy right now with ‘Welcome to Derry’ season two.”

For now, the future of ‘Crystal Lake’ rests with Peacock and with how many viewers dive into the full season. If the streamer gives the green light, Kane is clearly ready to take fans deeper into the town’s secrets.

Would you like Crystal Lake Season 2 to explore the town’s secrets in a Twin Peaks-style mystery?
