Could Supergirl Be Losing Milly Alcock After the Film’s Box Office Disappointment?

The DC Universe has had a turbulent few months, and the rumor mill has been working overtime. Between box office pressure, high-profile productions, and a steady stream of online speculation, fans have had plenty to dissect.

‘Supergirl’ put Milly Alcock front and center as Kara Zor-El, but the film struggled at the box office. It opened to under $40 million in North America in June and finished with roughly $117 million worldwide against a reported $170 million production budget, leaving fans to wonder what comes next for the character.

That uncertainty fed into a wave of DCU rumors this week, including claims that Alcock had been fired from the role. James Gunn has now addressed them directly, writing on Threads, “I’m mostly done shooting down rumors as there are so many, and I’m not on here much. But all three of these couldn’t be more false.”

The speculation began after fans noticed that Alcock had removed several ‘Supergirl’ posts from her Instagram, including her casting announcement. Online, that quickly turned into claims that she had been let go from the franchise. But the evidence was thin. No trade outlet reported a firing, and as of Gunn’s response, Alcock herself hadn’t commented on the changes to her feed.

Some fans also pointed out that not everything was gone. Reports noted that the first trailer and photos from interviews and the press tour remain on her account, which undercuts the idea that she had scrubbed every trace of the film.

Gunn’s response wasn’t only about Alcock. He was replying to a fan’s post that rounded up 3 pieces of DCU “fake news” circulating online. The second rumor claimed Matt Reeves was no longer directing ‘The Batman Part II’. That speculation followed news that Steven Soderbergh was stepping in to finish the final weeks of filming while Reeves dealt with a family matter.

Reeves has already clarified that he isn’t leaving the sequel and thanked Soderbergh for his help. He remains on the project and will return for post-production. The third rumor claimed ‘Man of Tomorrow’ had a disastrous test screening because of a dark ending that kills a beloved DC hero. Gunn’s timeline makes that impossible.

In the same post, Gunn told fans to stop listening to BS and revealed he was showing DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran his first director’s cut that very day. He noted that Safran would be the first person to see it, and that he was sharing it a month early.

Cosmic Book News reported that the assembly cut was only completed at the start of October, meaning there was no version of the film available for a test screening. ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is currently set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.

This isn’t the first time Gunn has stepped in to correct the record. He had already pushed back on the Reeves rumor earlier in the week, and his latest post suggests his patience with the speculation is wearing thin.

His comment that he’s “not on here much” also hints that fans shouldn’t expect him to address every claim going forward, with so many DC projects in motion that could leave a lot of room for misinformation to spread.

For now, Gunn’s denial is the clearest answer fans have received about Alcock’s status. Whatever the reason behind her Instagram cleanup, the DC Studios co-chief says the firing claim is completely false.

That should come as a relief to fans who enjoyed her take on Kara Zor-El. While the character’s future plans remain under wraps, there’s no indication that DC is moving on from its Supergirl.

Do you think James Gunn’s denial puts the Milly Alcock Supergirl firing rumors to rest?
