‘Scary Movie’ Star Jenny McCarthy Claims Tom Cruise Tried To Steer Her and Jim Carrey Toward Scientology
Jenny McCarthy has never been shy about sharing stories from her years in Hollywood, and her latest revelation takes fans back to one of the most talked-about celebrity weddings of the 2000s. At the time, the TV personality was dating Jim Carrey, which put the couple in some very high-profile circles.
That included an invitation to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ 2006 wedding in Italy. McCarthy says she was friendly with the couple back then and attended both the wedding and the rehearsal dinner with Carrey.
Now McCarthy is opening up about what she saw behind the scenes. On the October 15 episode of her podcast, she said she believes Cruise repeatedly tried to draw her and Carrey into Scientology, though she described him as very nice.
According to McCarthy, part of that effort came at the rehearsal dinner, where Cruise introduced her to Scientology leader David Miscavige. She later recalled an awkward exchange with Miscavige, whom she believes she may have unintentionally offended.
The outreach reportedly didn’t stop there. McCarthy claims Cruise later invited her and Carrey to Aspen, but Carrey turned the invitation down, reportedly worried they would be pressured to join the church.
These claims represent McCarthy’s own account and recollection. Page Six reported that it reached out to representatives for Cruise and Holmes but did not hear back before publication.
One of the most striking stories McCarthy shared involved Suri, Cruise and Holmes’ daughter, who had been born several months before the wedding. A self-described baby person, McCarthy says she asked to hold the infant during the rehearsal dinner.
She recalled that the room suddenly went quiet and tense when Holmes handed Suri over. McCarthy said that once she gave the baby back, everyone returned to their conversations as if nothing had happened, leaving her deeply unsettled.
McCarthy also shared her view of Holmes during that era. She said there was a stark contrast between Holmes and Cruise’s world, and she described the actress as seeming overwhelmed well into the marriage.
According to McCarthy, Cruise would arrive at gatherings with a group that followed him from room to room. She said she would watch Holmes trying to smile her way through it and would check in on her during social events.
She also offered a warmer memory from the wedding festivities. McCarthy described the speech from Holmes’ maid of honor about their high school days as charming, while Miscavige, who served as Cruise’s best man, reportedly gave a speech lasting around 30 minutes.
McCarthy’s stories came up during a conversation with a former member of the Sea Organization, who spent about 2 decades in the group before leaving in 2007. The guest described strict schedules, limited family contact, and pressure to conform, and claimed that members were treated differently from celebrity followers.
McCarthy said the wedding and related interactions were how she first encountered Scientology up close. Her comments add a celebrity perspective to the guest’s broader account of life inside the organization.
Cruise joined Scientology in 1986 after being introduced to it by his first wife, Mimi Rogers. He and Holmes married in 2006, and Holmes filed for divorce in 2012. Holmes has since kept Suri largely out of the public eye. Neither Cruise nor Holmes has publicly responded to McCarthy’s latest claims.
Two decades later, the Cruise–Holmes wedding remains a source of fascination for pop culture fans. McCarthy’s vivid account, told from inside the event, has quickly spread across entertainment outlets. Whether her experience was simple Hollywood hospitality or something more, as she believes, her recollections offer a rare inside look at a famously private celebrity world.
