Few Hollywood friendships have lasted as long, or produced as many wild stories, as the bond between Michael Douglas and Danny DeVito. According to Douglas, the 2 first crossed paths in 1967 on a Long Island beach, when a long-haired DeVito walked up, asked if he got high, and the pair shared a joint.

That friendship has followed them through decades of careers and adventures. DeVito has even claimed he saved Douglas’ life on the set of ‘Romancing the Stone’, saying he sucked the venom out of his friend’s hand after Douglas was bitten by a snake.

Douglas has plenty of reasons to look back these days. His memoir ‘One Helluva Ride’ arrived on October 6 from Grand Central Publishing, offering an unfiltered look at his life, from growing up in Kirk Douglas’ shadow to his personal struggles, love affairs, and his son’s addiction and prison sentence.

The book promises a career-spanning tour through the actor’s most iconic films. It also covers how he stunned Hollywood by winning his first Oscar at 31 for producing ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’, before landing a second for his performance in ‘Wall Street’.

Promotion for the memoir brought Douglas to ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ on October 14, and it was there that the 82-year-old actor shared his now-viral DeVito anecdote. He explained that he was driving with his longtime friend, now 81, to a concert when police pulled them over for an illegal left-hand turn.

Douglas recalled seeing the red lights behind him, stepping out of the car and walking back to speak with the officer about the turn. The catch was that the pair had a few joints with them, and DeVito was sitting in the back seat while Douglas handled the conversation.

When Douglas got back in the car, he asked his friend where the weed had gone. DeVito simply smiled, revealing a mouth that was completely green, because he had swallowed every last joint to make sure the police found nothing.

Douglas told the story with plenty of laughter, describing it as just one of many crazy situations the two friends have shared over the years. TMZ joked that DeVito ended up having a pretty dope dinner that night.

The anecdote quickly spread far beyond the podcast, with outlets around the world picking it up within days. Several outlets ran it with a headline highlighting that DeVito swallowed them all.

It’s easy to see why the story struck a chord. It captures the mischievous side of 2 beloved stars who have been friends for nearly 60 years, and it fits neatly into the memoir’s promise of outrageously funny behind-the-scenes stories.

The Rogan conversation covered serious ground as well. Douglas talked about his career as both producer and actor, from ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ to morally complex characters like Gordon Gekko, and recounted his transformation from a preppy youth into a hippie at UC Santa Barbara.

He also recalled a frightening encounter in which a cult allegedly tried to recruit him, insisting he join before letting him and his girlfriend go. On top of that, Douglas pressed Rogan on how he feels about Donald Trump now, after the host’s 2024 endorsement.

Fans hungry for more stories won’t have to wait long. Douglas is taking ‘One Helluva Ride’ on the road with live stage events, including UK dates from October 26 to 28, where he will share behind-the-scenes tales featuring a who’s who of Hollywood. If the DeVito story is anything to go by, audiences should expect plenty more jaw-dropping moments from one of Hollywood’s most colorful careers.
