When ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ swung into theaters on July 31, it didn’t just break records; it rewrote the box office history books. The film’s final tally gave it a $360 million domestic opening weekend, edging past ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and its $357 million debut to claim the biggest domestic opening of all time.

The worldwide numbers were just as staggering. ‘Brand New Day’ opened to $932 million globally, set a single-day domestic record with $169.3 million on its first Friday, and has since grossed more than $2 billion worldwide.

All eyes have now turned to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which arrives in U.S. theaters on December 18. Disney opened premium-format presales on July 20, roughly 5 months before release, and reported $16.5 million in domestic presales within the first 24 hours from about 1,000 premium screens.

General advance sales followed in August. After just 2 days, TheWrap reported that ‘Doomsday’ was running about 65% ahead of the pace ‘Brand New Day’ set in its own first 2 days of presales.

Now, a fresh update has box office watchers buzzing. A post shared on Reddit’s r/boxoffice, citing tracker Itsjat32, claims that in many markets, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ presales are already similar to what ‘Brand New Day’ had just 10 days before release, with 2 months still to go.

That lines up with other international tracking. A Bulgarian tracker reported that ‘Doomsday’ matched ‘Brand New Day’ at the same 10-day comparison point while leaving ‘Dune: Part Three’ far behind.

In Mexico, where ‘Doomsday’ opens on December 17, one tracker found the film running at nearly 89% of ‘Brand New Day’s’ total opening day sales. Occupancy across that sample stood at 55% of available opening-day seats.

The global picture looks equally strong. According to ComicBook.com, ‘Doomsday’ has crossed $100 million in global presales and became the fastest film to earn over $1 million in presales in both the UK and Brazil.

Domestic trackers have also compared its pace favorably. In one sample, ‘Doomsday’ Friday sales at 71 days out were running around where ‘Brand New Day’ stood 12 days before opening.

Not every analyst is ready to crown ‘Doomsday’ just yet. ‘Brand New Day’ only began selling tickets about 45 days before release, while ‘Doomsday’ has enjoyed a much longer sales window, which makes direct comparisons imprecise.

‘Brand New Day’ also remains a formidable benchmark. The Spidey sequel reportedly reached $150 million in advance sales by the Thursday before its opening, ahead of both ‘Endgame’ at $130 million and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ at $78 million. Competition is another factor. ‘Dune: Part Three’ opens on the same day as ‘Doomsday’ and holds exclusive IMAX access through the holidays.

Even with those caveats, the trend is hard to ignore. Industry watchers are openly asking whether ‘Doomsday’ could challenge ‘Brand New Day’ for the biggest opening weekend ever, with some even wondering if a $3 billion global run is possible.

Directed by the Russo brothers, ‘Doomsday’ brings Robert Downey Jr. back to the MCU as Doctor Doom, alongside the return of Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers. With that much star power and presales already rivaling a record-breaker, December could deliver another historic weekend.

Do you think Avengers: Doomsday will beat Spider-Man: Brand New Day for the biggest opening weekend of all time?
