‘The Housemaid’ Star Amanda Seyfried Draws Backlash for Her ‘You Can See Everything’ Role
Few actors are as closely tied to Elizabeth Holmes as Amanda Seyfried. She won an Emmy for playing the Theranos founder in Hulu’s ‘The Dropout’, a performance that made her the face of the story for many viewers. So when Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s documentary ‘You Can See Everything’ brought her back, it was one of the biggest surprises in the film.
The documentary follows Holmes in the 34 days before she began her prison sentence, then continues after she reports to prison. Because some of Fielder’s conversations with Holmes couldn’t be filmed, he recruited Seyfried to reenact them, with actor Christopher Abbott playing Holmes’ partner Billy Evans. Seyfried also appears as herself, reacting to the story as it unfolds.
Now that role is drawing heat online. According to reports from the New York Post and Fox News Digital, viewers have been criticizing Seyfried’s behavior in the film, with some accusing her of hypocrisy. Fox News Digital reached out to her representative for comment, and the story has since spread across social media.
The criticism centers on how Seyfried’s attitude shifts over the course of the film. She grapples with growing sympathy for Holmes, then becomes defensive when Holmes challenges how she was portrayed in ‘The Dropout’. Some viewers read that change as a kind of double standard, especially after she appears to defend Holmes as a victim of male manipulation.
Not everyone agrees. Plenty of viewers have come to her defense, arguing that her changing opinion isn’t hypocrisy but a central part of what the documentary is trying to show. One viewer noted that Fielder’s own view of Holmes shifts too, and another said Seyfried reckons with the consequences of her actions in a way that Holmes herself never does.

The film puts Holmes face to face with Seyfried’s work. When Fielder shows her ‘The Dropout’, Holmes becomes distressed, and in a later reenactment, she expresses anger over how she was portrayed. In that scene, Holmes claims that fellow inmates have watched the series and mistreat her over things she maintains she never did.
Variety describes Seyfried’s reaction to those accusations as immediately defensive, with her guard going up as she reads the script Fielder prepared. Intercut with her performance as Holmes, we see Seyfried as herself struggling to decipher what is real. The film’s structure leaves viewers wondering how authentic the reenactments are, since Fielder claims they’re built from Holmes’ real words even as he develops a warmth toward her.

The reaction hasn’t been entirely negative. The Daily Beast called Seyfried remarkable in the reenactment scenes and argued she arguably eclipses her Emmy-winning work in ‘The Dropout’. The outlet also argued that she deserves a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination, pointing to the way the film cuts between her playing Holmes and her speaking as herself.
The documentary itself has been a major success. ‘You Can See Everything’ opened on October 16 to $15 million from only 855 screens, one of the biggest debuts ever for a non-music documentary, and it holds a 99% score on both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. That level of attention means every performance in the film is being picked apart, and Seyfried’s is no exception.

Part of what makes the debate so compelling is that the film invites it. It blurs the line between performance and reality, so audiences end up judging everyone on screen, including the actress who once played Holmes. Whether viewers see Seyfried’s evolution as hypocrisy or honesty may say as much about them as about her.
Do you think Amanda Seyfried deserves the backlash for her role in ‘You Can See Everything’?
