A24’s ‘Slayground’ Trailer Reveals Release Date for New Horror Thriller
Haunted attractions have become fertile ground for horror, and ‘Slayground’ is the latest film to join a growing list of deadly scare-house movies. The idea works because the setting is already built to make fake death look convincing. When something real happens inside, the contrast does a lot of the work for the filmmaker.
This one comes with serious credentials. Jeremy Saulnier wrote and directed it, and his career has been defined by gritty cult hits like ‘Blue Ruin’, ‘Green Room’ and ‘Rebel Ridge’. A24 landed the project after a bidding war, and it was originally announced under the title ‘October’. A24 reportedly changed it because the studio wouldn’t hold the release for that month, although that detail isn’t officially confirmed.
Now the first full trailer has arrived. Several outlets shared it with a rundown of the premise: ‘Slayground’ stars Cory Michael Smith, Chase Sui Wonders, and Sophie Wilde and follows a scare actor who wakes up in a haunted attraction surrounded by dead co-workers with no memory of what happened. It opens in theaters on January 29.
According to the official synopsis, scare actor ‘Metal Mike’ Graves, played by Smith, wakes up inside the attraction surrounded by the bodies of his colleagues. A state-wide manhunt closes in as he races to uncover the truth, even if the trail leads straight back to him.

The trailer fills in the atmosphere. It opens with ominous shots while a woman addresses Michael in voiceover and invites him to talk about the events of October 24, then cuts to employees at the attraction getting ready for work. A police officer describes a mass casualty incident, and shots of what looks like a law enforcement raid and vehicles converging on a forest hint at a larger showdown.
Screen Rant notes that the violence is mostly implied through the aftermath rather than shown directly. Dread Central describes it as a traditional horror movie with all the bells and whistles, where the nightmare seems to extend well beyond the haunt itself. SlashFilm calls it part procedural, part supernatural thriller and part grimy slasher, while admitting the trailer reveals very little about what actually happened.
The reaction is partly a result of the earlier teaser. A24 first showed a short teaser in theaters ahead of ‘Resident Evil’, built like surveillance footage from inside a haunted attraction, and launched a countdown site. That footage, which looked like it was filmed at a real Halloween attraction with people reacting to scares, led some viewers to expect a found footage movie.

The full trailer shows something quite different. The film is a fugitive thriller about a suspect who goes on the run, rather than a hidden-camera experiment, and it’s not related to the 1983 crime thriller of the same name or the novel it’s based on.
Smith is in his first lead role in a feature film, after appearing in projects like ‘Saturday Night’ and ‘May December’. He’s joined by Chase Sui Wonders from ‘Bodies Bodies Bodies’, Sophie Wilde from ‘Talk to Me’, James Badge Dale, Stanley Simons, Stephen Root, Chris Sullivan and Young Mazino. Saulnier veterans Imogen Poots and Macon Blair also appear, along with Matty Matheson.
The score is reportedly composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. According to unconfirmed trade reports, the film runs around two and a half hours, and a recent test screening of that cut drew very positive reactions. That January release date may seem odd for a Halloween story, but it gives A24 a chance to stand out away from the crowded fall schedule.

For now, all that’s available is a synopsis and a trailer, so the biggest question remains: who or what is behind the killings? With Saulnier at the helm, expectations are high that the answer won’t be a simple one.
