‘Dune: Part Three’ Cast Joins the Ticket Push as ‘Dunesday’ Nears

Selling a blockbuster used to be simple: release a trailer, announce a date, and wait for opening weekend. These days, the biggest films stage their ticket sales in waves, with premium-format drops, general pre-sales and a steady stream of reminders from the stars. ‘Dune: Part Three’ is leaning heavily on that strategy.

Warner Bros. has spent months rolling out tickets in stages, following the approach used for Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, which reportedly recorded $50 million in IMAX pre-sales and a $52 million global IMAX opening weekend.

The earlier rounds covered previews and select IMAX and premium large format screenings, and some of them caused websites and apps to crash. Now the campaign has reached its widest stage yet. General pre-sales opened worldwide on October 20 for all formats and showtimes, and the studio has turned to its stars to spread the word.

Several outlets shared a new promo showing that the cast of ‘Dune: Part Three’ wants fans to know tickets are on sale now. The video, which runs about 31 seconds, comes from the film’s official account and features a hand pushing through orange desert sand, with a message that the film opens only in theaters and IMAX on December 18.

It’s the second recent push from the cast and creators. In an earlier video shared by Cineworld, Timothée Chalamet said he was excited to share the film with audiences around the world, and director Denis Villeneuve stressed that these movies are made for audiences to enjoy together in theaters on the biggest screen possible. Chalamet also confirmed that tickets were on sale, and Cineworld said early IMAX previews would begin on December 15.

The studio also released a 24-second teaser with the words ‘Now on Sale’ over a misty, ghostly structure seen through the mouth of a cave. It was described as more of a ticket announcement than a trailer. Together, the clips make the message clear: this is a film that Warner Bros. wants to be seen on a big screen.

The cast is one of the most stacked in the franchise. Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, who now rules as Emperor, with Zendaya as Chani, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia, and Charlotte Rampling. Robert Pattinson joins as Scytale, and the story adapts ‘Dune Messiah’, set 17 years after the previous film. Villeneuve has said this would be his final ‘Dune’ project.

The urgency makes more sense in the context of the calendar. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens on December 18 as well, a head-to-head that fans have nicknamed ‘Dunesday’. Marvel’s film reportedly pulled in $16.5 million in its first 24 hours of advance sales and passed $50 million in presales three months before release, with 70% of those tickets for premium formats outside of IMAX.

That’s where ‘Dune’ has an edge. The film is reported to hold three weeks of global IMAX exclusivity, which keeps Marvel out of that format during a crucial stretch of the holiday season, and Villeneuve shot much of it with IMAX film cameras. The release is said to feature 71 minutes in IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio, so the format is central to the film’s appeal.

Early demand has been intense. In the UK, thousands of fans joined virtual queues for the BFI IMAX on October 20, and one estimate put more than 76,000 people still waiting 20 minutes after sales began. Dune Insider screenings are set to begin on December 14 in IMAX 70mm.

With two blockbusters launching on the same day, the next two months will be a test of how many people want to see both on opening weekend. For now, the cast’s message is simple, and the lines at the box office suggest that fans are listening.
