What Tom Hardy Wears on His Wrist as Harry Da Souza in ‘MobLand’ Says About the Character
Tom Hardy stars in ‘MobLand’ as Harry Da Souza, a fixer working for a London crime family. The role has made him the anchor of the Paramount+ drama, and a close look at his costume shows that one accessory carries a surprising amount of story.
The second season premiered globally on Paramount+ on September 18. That makes this a good moment to examine how Tom Hardy as Harry Da Souza is dressed, and why the costume team made the choices they did.
Harry Da Souza Costume Choices in the Harrigan World
Costume designer Rebecca Hale dressed the Harrigan family in clothes that cost a great deal and say nothing. The family runs the dark side of London, yet nothing in their wardrobe announces it.
The exception is the watches. Hale told Country & Town House that “The watches tell a story.” It is a small detail, but it explains where the show chooses to place its visual emphasis.
Hale said Conrad, Maeve and Harry went for absolute classics, the kind of pieces everyone would wear, because they do not want to be noticed. The restraint is part of the characterization, and it makes any departure from it worth reading closely.
Harry Da Souza’s Gold Rolex and Oyster Bracelet
According to Something About Rocks, Harry wears a Rolex GMT-Master II in 18 carat yellow gold, with a black dial and a black ceramic bezel, on a yellow gold Oyster bracelet. That is the piece sitting on Hardy’s wrist in many of his scenes.
The outlet reports that Rolex has discontinued the model, which makes it very collectable, and that a good example costs around £35,000 on the secondary market. It is not an anonymous accessory, even if the show never draws attention to it.
The same report points out that Harry is staff rather than the boss, and yet he wears the most valuable watch in the show. That observation turns a piece of jewellery into a quiet comment on where Harry sits in the Harrigan hierarchy.
MobLand Costume Design and the Rest of the Family
Pierce Brosnan’s Conrad wears a 39mm Omega Constellation Globemaster in Sedna gold on a brown alligator strap. Brosnan wore a Seamaster in all four of his Bond films, so the choice carries an extra layer for viewers who notice it.
Helen Mirren’s Maeve wears a two tone Omega Constellation on a bracelet and a black enamel pendant with a silver Celtic cross. Hale chose the pendant to mark Maeve’s Irish roots and her Catholicism.
Paddy Considine’s Kevin wears a titanium Hublot Classic Fusion Chronograph on a black rubber strap, and Anson Boon’s Eddie wears a Hublot too. Hale describes Eddie’s watch as brash and show-offy, in contrast to the classics worn by the older generation. Against that backdrop, Harry’s gold bracelet reads as a deliberate choice rather than an accident of styling.
Tom Hardy and MobLand Season Two
Hardy wore the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition to the season two premiere at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square, alongside former Bond Pierce Brosnan. The titanium watch has a brown tropical dial and sits on a striped NATO strap. It is a very different look from the gold on screen.
Hardy has spoken about how Harry shifts between settings. In a video for Deadline he said “Harry is Harry depending on who he is with.” That fits a character who moves between family loyalty, violence and his own marriage.
The first season ended with Harry accidentally stabbed in the chest by his wife Jan, played by Joanne Froggatt. Speaking to the Press Association, Hardy said the joy of playing Harry lies in the fact that he never quite has the right words or the right solution.
Reports of trouble behind the scenes surfaced before Deadline confirmed that Hardy would return to the series. In the season two trailer, Harry tells Conrad that his job is to prevent a change in who runs north London. With a fixer so carefully dressed, does the gold on Harry’s wrist read to you as quiet loyalty to the Harrigans or a hint that he has outgrown his place in the family?
