‘Blue Lights’ Season 4 Episode 4 Recap and Ending Explained: Gerry Cliff’s Secret File Lands in Sandra’s Hands

This ‘Blue Lights’ recap begins with a structural surprise. The episode, titled “So Far,” aired on BBC One on October 20 and runs about an hour, and it largely sets the present day investigation aside to revisit how Gerry and Sandra Cliff first came together.

The ending explained matters just as much, because it puts a dangerous document back in Sandra’s possession. Spoilers follow for everything that happens in the episode.

Gerry and Sandra Flashback Opens the Story

The episode begins in the past with Gerry leaving his house with a bag and a guitar. Richard Dormer returns as Gerry in an extended flashback that traces the origins of the couple’s relationship during a public order training exercise. Hannah McClean also returns as solicitor Jen Robinson, alongside Jonathan Harden as disgraced former Inspector Jonty Johnston.

Gerry is a riot police instructor who first meets Sandra, a quick witted policewoman from Dagenham, on a training day. During a petrol bomb drill, Sandra hesitates before Gerry steps in with calm encouragement. In a later class, Gerry helps her walk through fire by singing her favorite song.

Sandra later rushes into danger to protect a casualty, which prompts Gerry to halt the drill and pull her out of harm’s way. On the final day she tells him she had fun and gives him her number in case he is ever in Dagenham. One reviewer described the extended flashback as warm and deeply affecting, and the early scenes make it easy to see why. Yorkshire Post reviewer Yvette Huddleston called it a lovely and extremely moving look at how the couple met.

Romance blossoms and Sandra visits Gerry in Belfast. Helen tells Sandra that Gerry is the best of them, and sometime later she mentions an opening at Blackthorn. Shortly after that, Sandra and Gerry are married.

James McIntyre and the Special Branch Secret

Their first date naturally involves a spot of policing, as the pair apprehend a man Gerry had previously been told to leave alone. He turns out to be an informant, so he walks free. Gerry hands him to Constable Jen Robinson after a foot chase.

The evening gives Gerry the chance to explain a career choice that has always puzzled colleagues. His story involves a car bomb, his time in Special Branch, and the discovery that James McIntyre was connected to the bomb that scarred him. He was ordered to stay away from McIntyre and given an ultimatum to resign and never return or spend the rest of his career in response.

One preview says the flashback also exposes Gerry’s early clash with C3 intelligence officer Paul ‘Colly’ Collins, played by Michael Smiley, over surveillance of James McIntyre. That detail gives the episode weight beyond romance. It connects Gerry’s personal history to the criminal family that has shaped the show from the start.

Longtime viewers will recall how deep that connection runs. The first series revealed that James McIntyre had secretly worked with MI5 as an informant since 1998. Seen through that lens, Gerry’s removal from serious investigative work looks less like bad luck and more like something engineered.

Sandra Cliff and the Ending Explained

After the wedding, Gerry shows Sandra the file he has put together on James. It details James McIntyre’s protected crime ring and unpunished offenses, and Sandra urges her new husband to bury the paperwork so they can build a peaceful future. That request gives the closing scenes their emotional pull.

In the present day, Sandra remembers the file Gerry showed her and gets it out of hiding, which is where the episode ends. According to one recap, Mo McIntyre’s sudden release from trial leaves Sandra devastated, so she prises open the floorboards and retrieves the confidential file.

The file also seems to reach beyond the McIntyres. One review reports that as Sandra examines the old McIntyre files, she discovers that Nicola Robinson had a hand in it all. That would widen the circle of people with something to lose.

The official synopsis says Sandra realises she is in possession of volatile information. The ending explained comes down to that realisation. Gerry’s secret has been waiting under her floor, and she now has to decide what to do with it.

What Comes Next for Blackthorn

The remaining chapters suggest the secret will not stay private for long. In the next episode, titled “Ghosts,” Sandra enlists help to expose Gerry’s secrets, while Tommy and Shane inch closer to exposing the drug pipeline. The finale is described as the point where Gerry’s evidence on state collusion is released.

Director Sam O’Mahony handles the second half of the series, directing the final three episodes. The tone is also shifting toward resolution. Co-creators Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson have said they are stepping back from the series, with Patterson calling it the end of a chapter.

That context makes Sandra’s choice feel heavier. If Gerry’s file does expose state collusion, the ‘Blue Lights’ team may be building toward a conclusion rather than a pause. Whether Sandra should trust anyone at Blackthorn with what Gerry left beneath her floorboards, or take it somewhere beyond the station entirely, is the question the episode leaves hanging, and it is one worth debating in the comments.
