Annie Potts Didn’t Hold Back About the ‘Young Sheldon’ Finale, and Her Criticism Cuts Deep
Series finales are a minefield, and few recent sitcom endings carried as much expectation as the one that closed out Sheldon Cooper’s childhood. The ‘Young Sheldon’ finale wrapped a 7-season run in May 2024, tying a bow on the Cooper family story while bridging back to the show that started it all. Two years on, the cast is finally speaking candidly about how it all went down.
The ending itself was an event. Jim Parsons returned as the adult Sheldon alongside Mayim Bialik as Amy Farrah Fowler, marking his first on-screen appearance as the character since ‘The Big Bang Theory’ ended in 2019. Parsons had narrated the prequel from the start and served as an executive producer, so the cameo read as a natural full-circle moment.
Not everyone on set saw it that way. In Jessica Radloff’s new book, ‘Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw’s-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy’, Annie Potts, who played Sheldon’s grandmother Connie “Meemaw” Tucker, made her disappointment plain. “That broke my heart,” she said of the flash-forward.
Potts’ issue wasn’t the cameo itself, but what it revealed about the character. She described the future adult Sheldon as mean and unchanged, and recalled thinking, “Really? Still no responsibility?” She summed it up bluntly as “just selfishness.”
Her frustration centered on a specific detail. Despite having 2 children with Amy, the adult Sheldon hesitated over attending his son Leonard’s hockey game, which undercut years of emotional growth the prequel had built.

Potts also had a clear alternative in mind. She said the series could have ended with Iain Armitage’s young Sheldon, pointing to the scuba suit baptism scene as a natural stopping point, rather than what she called “the dreaded scene” with Parsons and Bialik.
She went further still, comparing the two ‘Big Bang Theory’ stars to party crashers and saying the ending gave her a stomachache. Importantly, her criticism was aimed at how the older version of the character was written, not at Parsons personally.
The book paints a picture of a set that was uneasy about more than just the final scene. Lance Barber, who played George Sr., recalled the mood shifting once everyone knew the end was coming, and said Potts was vocally upset. He admitted he felt almost guilty for being less disappointed than his castmates.
Tension also came from how the news was delivered. Key details were kept from much of the cast, and the cancellation was reportedly relayed via a Zoom call described as informal and impersonal. Potts had other grievances too. She said she felt devalued after not being offered a series regular role on the spinoff ‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’.
Interestingly, the show’s lead had the opposite reaction. Armitage, now 18, said he was the happiest about the show ending, and that he wasn’t going home and crying all day like some of his colleagues.
He pointed to the heaviness of the final season, which dealt with George Sr.’s death, calling it heavy and annoying and weird. He also joked that playing a 23-year-old Sheldon would have been miserable, concluding that it was a perfect time to end it.
This isn’t the first time Potts has spoken out. She previously called the cancellation a “stupid business move” in an interview with Variety, noting the show was still performing strongly for CBS.

According to the book, that comment prompted a phone call from co-creator Chuck Lorre, who explained that CBS was upset and that the decision came from the creative team. Potts responded sarcastically that her own feelings had been hurt too, adding that she had simply been enjoying the work.
Do you agree with Annie Potts that the Young Sheldon finale should have ended without the adult Sheldon cameo?
