‘Lupin’ Season 3 Recap: What the Prison Cliffhanger Means for Season 4
This ‘Lupin’ recap starts with a series that spent its third season answering one question, which was where Assane Diop had gone. The seven episodes follow Assane as he reflects on what matters in his life. Netflix’s own summary says he steals the Black Pearl, wins over the French public, fakes his death and saves his estranged mother’s life.
The fourth season reaches Netflix on October 23. That makes this a good moment to look back at how the story reached its last scene and what that scene sets in motion.
The ‘Lupin’ Recap Starts With Assane Diop on the Run
The second season ended with Assane begging Claire to take their son Raoul and run away with him, and she refused. She told him to take responsibility for his actions and surrender to the police.
The third season picks up a year later, with Assane living undercover in Marseille, where he has become a kind of celebrity and folk hero. That was after he recorded Hubert Pellegrini confessing to setting up his father and sent the recording to Detective Guédira, which led to Pellegrini’s arrest.
The media and society made life very hard for Claire and Raoul, and Assane realized he had to do something so his people could live in peace. His answer was to fake his own death.
One of the season’s payoffs was Guédira, the Ganimard to Assane’s Lupin, teaming up with his supposed rival in an homage to the Maurice Leblanc adventure ‘The Red Silk Scarf’. Den of Geek singled out the montage where the two build an art dealer persona for Guédira as one of the season’s best moments.
Why the Third Season Ending Put Assane Behind Bars
The climax centers on Keller, Assane’s old boxing coach, who was jailed for 25 years, blamed Assane for his fate and kidnapped Assane’s mother, Mariama, to get back at him. Assane struck a deal with Keller’s girlfriend, Manon, and got Keller arrested.
That allowed him to rescue Claire and Raoul, and Raoul met Mariama for the first time. Assane then turned himself in, but not before meeting Claire, Raoul and Mariama at the train station and handing them a letter explaining his actions.
Assane seems content, for now, to serve his sentence with a well worn collection of Lupin novels for company. One outlet reasoned that this means he will have to escape at the start of the next chapter.
The Letter in the Cell and the Fourth Season Setup
Den of Geek argued that the final moments recast the previous episodes in a more ominous context. In the last scene, a guard hands Assane an envelope and says it comes from his neighbor in the other cell.
Inside is a Polaroid of young Assane holding his first Lupin novel, ‘The Cagliostro’s Revenge’. A threatening message is included as well. The book is about an old enemy using someone close to Lupin to take revenge on him.
Netflix itself noted that viewers can recognize the silhouette of the cigar smoking inmate at the end of the season. ComingSoon expects the new season to see Assane face Pellegrini again while uncovering the truth about Mariama.
Fourth Season Release Date, Cast and Production
The new season runs eight episodes, one more than the third season, and arrives three years after it, the longest wait in the show’s history. Filming began in Paris in May 2025 and wrapped that September.
Ludivine Sagnier, Antoine Gouy, Soufiane Guerrab and Shirine Boutella are returning, while Théo Christine and Laïka Blanc-Francard join the cast. Mathilde Arnaud, Jean-Yves Arnaud, Tigran Rosine and Florent Meyer return as writers, with Edouard Salier directing. The season is also expected to show Assane out in the open, which would mark a significant narrative shift.
Omar Sy told Netflix Tudum “I often say that Lupin is an extraordinary plaything.” The series remains Netflix’s biggest French hit and holds the fifth and ninth spots on its all time most watched list for series in languages other than English.
That history raises the stakes for a story that now has to play out from a prison cell. Do you think the cigar smoking inmate in the neighboring cell is the real danger to Assane’s family, or is the Polaroid from ‘The Cagliostro’s Revenge’ a trap that only a Lupin fan would see through?
