Who Is Marcus Burke on ‘Chicago Fire’ and Why Firehouse 51 Cannot Figure Him Out
Marcus Burke has quickly become one of the most discussed newcomers on ‘Chicago Fire’. Played by Da’Vinchi, he joined Firehouse 51 as a confident and rebellious firefighter candidate. He arrived with plenty of swagger and very little explanation of where he came from.
Anyone asking who Marcus Burke is on ‘Chicago Fire’ had to be patient. He stayed a mysterious loner until the third episode of the season, when he started warming up to his colleagues. That episode finally gave viewers a reason for his guarded behavior.
Marcus Burke’s Role at Firehouse 51
Burke is a firefighter candidate, which makes him one of the probies, the newest and least tested people in the house who must earn the respect of the veterans. The official character description calls him roguish and funny, with a wry sense of humor and a little defiance.
That defiance showed up early. During training, Burke and his fellow recruits were chaotic, and Herrmann said their run was among the worst drills he had ever seen. The performance gave Stella Kidd real cause for concern.
Severide reminded Stella that the firehouse was the candidates’ last stop before assignment, so they were especially eager to impress. For Burke, that pressure only sharpened the gap between his confidence and his standing with the group.
Da’Vinchi’s Path to ‘Chicago Fire’
Da’Vinchi is 30 years old and previously appeared on ‘All American’ and ‘BMF’. On ‘BMF’ he played one of the real Flenory brothers before moving into the main cast of this firefighter drama.
Deadline first reported the casting, and TVLine later confirmed it. Comic Basics noted that playing a firehouse rule breaker shows a different kind of range from his earlier rebellious role.
The actor has also spoken about the physical side of the job. He praised the production team for filming with real flames and trained firefighters. That commitment to realism suits a character who is meant to be thrown into the heat.
Burke’s Secret Revealed in “Take the Hit”
The reveal came in the third episode, and it grew out of a mistake in the field. A chemical fire at a warehouse sent a firefighter named Tony to the hospital after someone grabbed a gas valve and caused a pressure surge. Suspicion swung toward Burke because of his renegade image and a secret visit to Gaffney.
Kidd and Severide investigated and found that fellow candidate McCaffrey was the one responsible. McCaffrey had also asked his father, an Illinois state senator, to ease the pressure on him and his team. The entitled recruit was fired from the department.
Before that, McCaffrey rounded on Burke and pointed out that nobody at the station truly knows him, while Capp asked why Burke never stopped by Tony’s room. The hospital trip then made sense. The camera showed Burke sitting at the bedside of his comatose father, whose medical paperwork also bore the name M. Burke.
The revelation explains his guarded and isolated behavior and recasts his refusal to visit Tony as something far more personal. It turns a character who looked like a simple troublemaker into someone carrying a private weight.
The Firehouse 51 Candidate Class and What Comes Next
Burke is not the only new face. Matthew Daddario of ‘Shadowhunters’ also joined as a firefighter candidate. The cast around them includes Taylor Kinney, David Eigenberg, Christian Stolte, Miranda Rae Mayo, Hanako Greensmith, Jocelyn Hudon and Brandon Larracuente.
The newcomers arrive during a period of change behind the scenes as well. Showrunner Andrea Newman has left after more than a decade, with Victor Teran taking over the role. A fresh creative hand and a fresh class of recruits give the writers room to reshape the house.
Burke now has a clear emotional anchor, and the show has a natural path for him. The reveal gives the series a candidate who may finally let his crew in. Whether Burke opens up to Severide and the veterans, or keeps his father’s condition to himself a little longer, is a question worth debating, so tell us in the comments whether you think Marcus Burke should share his family situation with Firehouse 51.
