With ‘Superman’ launching the new DC Universe and its sequel already shot, fans have been eager for their first real look at what comes next. ‘Man of Tomorrow’, written and directed by James Gunn, is set for theaters on July 9, 2027, and anticipation has been building since the title was revealed.

The sequel brings back David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, who reluctantly team up against Lars Eidinger’s Brainiac. Gunn has described it as much a Lex movie as a Superman movie, and the cast also includes Rachel Brosnahan, Milly Alcock, Aaron Pierre and Xolo Maridueña.

Now Gunn is trying to manage expectations about when fans will see the first footage. On Threads, a user accused him of hating it when fans get excited about upcoming DC projects.

Gunn pushed back on that idea. He explained that he simply doesn’t want people to be disappointed when no trailer arrives in December, making it pretty clear that a teaser for ‘Man of Tomorrow’ isn’t coming before the end of the year.

The reply quickly spread on social media, where some fans reacted with a mix of disappointment and dark humor over the long wait. The hope for a December trailer wasn’t random. DC Studios has followed a pattern of revealing first teasers around the end of the year, and the previous December brought the first look at ‘Supergirl’.

Some outlets had speculated that a ‘Man of Tomorrow’ teaser could play in front of ‘Dune: Part Three’, which opens December 18. But Gunn had already hinted otherwise when asked at the ‘Clayface’ premiere whether a sneak peek was coming soon, simply answering no before walking away laughing.

His latest comment confirms what that brief exchange suggested. Fans will likely have to wait until next year for footage. The lack of a trailer isn’t because the film is behind schedule. Principal photography began on April 20 under the working title ‘Exodus’, mostly at Trilith Studios in Georgia, with additional shooting in Cincinnati and the United Kingdom.

Gunn announced on August 26 that filming had wrapped after roughly 93 days. With nearly a year until release, there’s plenty of time for post-production and a carefully planned marketing rollout.

Even without a trailer, there have been a few teases. In June, DC Studios released a first look at Hoult in Lex Luthor’s comics-accurate Warsuit, and Maridueña’s return as Blue Beetle was revealed in July.

The original title announcement came with artwork from Jim Lee, Jorge Jiménez and Mitch Gerads. The cover of the second script draft, showing a brain illustration, had already fueled speculation about Brainiac before his casting was confirmed.

Gunn’s honesty may be disappointing for some fans, but it fits his reputation for talking openly with audiences. By setting expectations early, he’s hoping to avoid a wave of frustration when December passes without footage.

For now, the wait continues. When the first look finally arrives, it will be one of the most anticipated superhero trailers of next year, especially with the DCU building toward bigger crossovers.

How do you feel about James Gunn confirming that a Man of Tomorrow trailer won't arrive in December?
